Amazon Love Lyrics

Everybody in this place is dreaming
It's been that way forever
They're all gonna wake up soon
They'll all be hell for leather

Up the smoky walls of yesterday
And the dusty prints of last year
The nicotine burning sycophants
And the glowing mold of fear

Gonna sweep this house clean out
Gonna blow out all the lights
We'll dream back up the Amazon
We'll steer her home tonight
We'll steer her home tonight

In the elegant sails of infinity
And the blowing winds of old love
Are the words from the mouths of the delicate crowds
In the shimmering realms up above

Blow me home
Blow me home
Blow me home
Take me in hold me close
Blow me home
We're aware of perspective to not be rejected
Blow me home
Blow me home
Blow me home

Blow me home
Blow me home
Blow me home

Now quick to the cut are we waking
And seeing it all as the dream
The pillars that raised us are shaking
And Samson's will is the theme

That one minute we see and the next we don't
In our minds in the devil's long tail
Slapping sense to its peak and a hard strung out week
And so back to the love in our sails

Gonna sweep this house clean out
Gonna blow out all of the lights
We'll dream back up the Amazon
We'll steer her home tonight
We'll steer her home tonight

I believe this song is meant to be a continuation of The Water, in which the protagonist has died and his corpse is floating down the river, but the situation is symbolic of the peaceful journey to the afterlife.

This song seems to continue the theme of a peaceful journey up a river (the Amazon) to the afterlife. He notes that "everyone in this place is dreaming" suggesting to me that they are no longer attached to physical reality. "For in the sleep of death what dreams may come/ When we have shuffled off this mortal coil". For these the dead, the world is a memory, an old photograph, a dusty print. The theme of the journey to the afterlife is reinforced by the reference to the realms up above. The invocation of Samson's dying moment (bringing down the pillars) and seeing one minute and not the next solidifies the theme of morality.

My Interpretation

a few small corrections:

  • third stanza: It's "We'll dream BACK up the Amazon", just as at the end of the song

  • I believe the word that's missing is "realms" --> "In the shimmering realms up above"

  • I think it's not "NOT quick to the cut are we waking", but "NOW quick to the cut..."

Thank you. Appreciated.

Thank YOU for posting nearly all the lyrics to Been Listening! I couldn't have figured them out all by myself as I am not a native speaker of english. I haven't checked all of them yet, but I will do so within the next days. I'll let you know if I have any further objections ;)

I do think it's "the dusty prints of last year" ... as in photographs... Maybe not.

also... "Samson's will is the fiend." Biblically, even after Samson's power was lost with his hair, be brought down the pillars and destroyed the Philistines. I think "will" makes sense...

Johnny Flynn is a bit reminiscent of Johnny Cash in some ways

Love love love this song.. Only a few things, I'm pretty sure it's "week" and not "weak" and also I always thought it was "and so back to the love in our sails" not sold but I could definitely be wrong on that one

@PeopleofLetters sounds like "sails"
