The Last Prom On Earth Lyrics

I've been thinking about the way you hold me lately
On a bus, my head, near Missouri
All the things we done, don't matter much if at all
It's over now

Would you hustle,
would you break me off some bread
Maybe I'll just get baked here in bed
Remember all the cradling and touching
It's always the same

This will be our last prom
All your little love songs

All the time we spent in the Dollar General
(I would love you for always)
Picking out the gifts for your little niece
(I know that she'll love it)
I wonder if they got the wrong opinion
(a picture lasts longer)
The way they looking at me

This will be our last prom
All your little love songs
This will be our last prom
Full of nothing but silly little love songs
I promise
no matter what we did, in the past,
what you think of, your opinions
I promise, from now, I'll be true
But if you don't trust me girl, that's ok, I understand
It's been a really long road
We've had our ups and downs
So do me this last favor
Me and you
One last prom
Just for me and you
One last prom

I'm ready for you of that bed
I'm showing them Chad's some static
I'm noticing a '10' to the right,
but i'd rather trade up in attics
I burn the needle down red
tryin' to find my credit some debit
when I wake you're Socratic
sold the world, took it back, you're at it Oba
chopped up insisted implied,
i'm on the 10 clicks on a side
seven 38s, heard 'em say your name
up in the bitch debates!!

Justin Vernon semi-rapping. hilarious.

oh man. i don't know if hilarious is the right word or not, but as soon as Kanye + Vernon's compilation album comes out... i guess we'll find out.

i don't see it being anything less than god-like.

this song it so amazing.

update: i heard the kanye+vernon track.

:(

dang, i am disappoint.

I thought that this song was being satirical. A prom dance shouldn't be something that is so emotional. I also don't see "the bitch debates" being used seriously... Maybe it's just that I want it to be satirical though...

I think this song is talking about screwing up a long relationship by breaking a partners trust ("I promise, from now, I'll be true - But if you don't trust me girl, that's ok, I understand"). 'One last prom' is a metaphor for getting a second chance, even when there are prettier women the singer could get ("I'm noticing a '10' to the right") however, he wants his old flame ("but i'd rather trade up in attics"). The last few lines talk about how the singer will do anything to get this person back, using emotional, creditable, and possibly by financial means ("I burn the needle down red - tryin' to find my credit some debit"). Once he gets this person back she will teach him a lesson ("when I wake you're Socratic") and the other women will be jealous ("heard 'em say your name up in the bitch debates!!")

That's how I see it, hope some others comment on the meaning of this great song! :)

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this song. I like it, but at the same time I can't take all of it seriously. Especially the rap/talking from Justin Vernon. I still love him though. He makes me laugh.

Like much of the rest of this album, this song is total irony, kids. Quasi sentimental soft teenage 80's pop. It's just supposed to make you smile because it's so cheesy.

For the rap/talk section, I think it might actually be:

I'm ready for you hot on that bed I'm showing them Chads some static I'm noticing a '10' to the right, But I'd rather trade up in attics I burned your dollar red Tryin' to find my credit some debit When I wake you're Socratic Saw the world talkin' 'bout you're at it, oh no Chopped up insisted implied, I'm on the 10 clicks on a side Seven 38s Heard 'em say your name up in the bitch debates!!

Also, loving jrhalvy's interpretation skillzz! And yep, I agree with gaelicsteak that it's supposed to be satirical, but the extended storyline with this sentimental, pseudo-philosophical rap surely makes it all the more mocking. Wicked beats, anywayz.

Phew, good. I'm glad some people agree with me! Although I am a little sick of "irony" in the "indie" world though. (Please note my quotation marks. Haha.)

I believe you're right that our singer cheated, though he's not apologizing and that's part of the parody aspect - it's a guys lame (reminiscing about the Dollar General, and her holding his head on a bus near Missouri. That is great stuff.) attempt to sweet talk his girl into taking him back, or at least to agree to one last roll. "But if you don't trust me girl, that's ok, I understand, It's been a really long road. We've had our ups and downs. So do me this last favor. Me and you One last prom."
That's my take. Reminds me of MacArthur Park with the overblown sentimentality. And I love the sultry sax. But most of the last stanza loses me, especially the seven 38s. Somebody got a clue?
