This time in between the day and the night
the light kills my sense of life
so scared, turn it off, turn it off
It's dull, this dusk, this desk, this dust
My eyes adjust
I'll blow out the flame
Can you and me remain?
Changes, never been good with change
I hate it when it all stays the same
caught between the gold and the game
Changes, never been good with change
I hate it when it all stays the same
caught between the cold and the waves
My heart beats up, again
Once said, words make a world of their own
I misread
I can't get you back on the phone
I'm so tired, so turn it off, turn it off
How's that, last week we were home
you're far away
and I hardly know
Can you and me delay?
Changes, never been good with change
I hate it when it all stays the same
caught between the gold and the game
Changes, never been good with change
troubled when it all stays the same
caught between this cold and the waves
My heart beats up, again
Are you my trouble
Are you my trouble
the light kills my sense of life
so scared, turn it off, turn it off
My eyes adjust
I'll blow out the flame
Can you and me remain?
I hate it when it all stays the same
caught between the gold and the game
Changes, never been good with change
I hate it when it all stays the same
caught between the cold and the waves
My heart beats up, again
I misread
I can't get you back on the phone
I'm so tired, so turn it off, turn it off
How's that, last week we were home

I hate it when it all stays the same

Stars did it again. I listened to this song for the first time today and I understood it perfectly, for the theme of this song has been weighing heavily on my mind for the past month. I just broke up with my boyfriend of nearly a year. I knew it had to happen - we just couldn't make things work, and though I hated to, I finally broke things off just a few days ago.
I didn't want things to change, but I knew things couldn't stay the same.
Stars speaks to my soul so well.
Are we sure that it says "caught between the cold and the wave?" It sounds like it is "caught between the cold and the way" which makes much more sense to me when coupled with the next phrase. I think the full phrase is "caught between the cold and the way my heart beats up again." In other words, she feels caught between the fact that there is no longer a burning fire of love that she feels for her significant other, and yet as soon as she breaks off the relationship her heart "beats up again," because she suddenly realizes that she is alone, and that she misses the person she just broke up with.
Unfortunately, I didn't buy a physical copy of this album, but rather obtained it via digital download, so I don't know if the lyrics are included in the liner notes of the CD. Can anyone verify that the lyrics listed above are correct? I admit that an argument can easily be made for the "wave" lyric as well, but it just seems to me that "way" is more fitting for the song.
I absolutely love this song, by the way. I just listen to it on repeat over and over and over. It's so beautiful. I love Stars.
i love love this song <3 stars are amazing! i love the line "Once said, words make a world of their own I misread" because it shows how something so abstract (ie. words) can create so much meaning depending on the way you interpret them. (kind of like how i'm analyzing that line lol). words can make a world of their own because they can represent so many ideas. in this case, she misreads someone's words (maybe her lover) and so she is dissociated from the true meaning of the situation into her own (which would mean that those words have created their own world because it is different from her own). she then can't get him back on the phone as if they'd had an argument over a misunderstanding. i'm not sure if that makes any sense haha but that's how i interpret that line :)
If you've never been good with change, why would you hate when things stay the same? I don't get it...am I missing something?
Maybe it's like that when a relationships is failing... you don't want it to be over, because of all the history and the good stuff, and you are afraid what the change might bring you... but on the other hand you just can't take it anymore, and you know that it can't stay the same...

it seems to me like the chorus, if written with impeccable english grammar, might be read as:

it's not really a contradiction, it's just lacking a conjunction, according to my reading anyway. and this would mean that, while the singer may not handle change well, she still gets very bored and irritated when things stay the same. like, maybe, a relationship. you stay with one person too long, you get bored. so you...

I see is as a complicated love/hate issue. Try not looking at it so literally, especially because it's a Stars song.

I think I agree with Paramnida re: "way" - especially listening to live versions.
Ahh this song is beautiful. Love the line "it's dull, this dusk, this desk, this dust" such assonance! alliteration! It's perfect!
To me, their relationship is changing. Maybe they broke up and he may have said to her "I can see us being together, just not right now. " and she held onto those words, and suddenly he is moving on to another girl, and she is confused as to whether he led her on or if she misunderstood what he was really saying. She looks back and says that things were good and great and they were happy, and now a week later they are a mess..
I dont know, that is my interpretation, this song strikes home to me for many reasons...
Maybe they went from being "In a relationship" to "Just Friends", its a huge change, and she hates it..
