I'll Never Drop My Sword Lyrics
I wish your mind was more like your heart
Nailed shut
Looking back, can't remember too much love
Now when I fall down
When I get weak
When I grow tired
I'll never drop my sword
Tell me a sadder story
So I can fall asleep
The right way, if I knew the right away
Well, we wouldn't be here
Now when I fall down
When I get weak
When I grow tired
I'll never drop my sword
Do you think Jesus loves me?
Can I go home again?
I'm a boy.
Nailed shut
Looking back, can't remember too much love
When I get weak
When I grow tired
I'll never drop my sword
So I can fall asleep
The right way, if I knew the right away
Well, we wouldn't be here
When I get weak
When I grow tired
I'll never drop my sword
Can I go home again?

It seems to be self-talk from someone struggling with their gender identity. In the first verse it seems like they are thinking back to their childhood wishing their parents were as unaware as they were unloving.
The chorus seems to be a mantra they tell themselves that no matter how they feel they won't drop their sword i.e. manhood. They are telling themself to ignore their feelings rather than dealing with them.
In the second verse, they seem to lament how sad their life is and wish to hear a "sadder story" to forget about their own life long enough to fall asleep.
"Do you think Jesus loves me?" They wonder if Jesus loves people who don't conform to the gender they were assigned at birth. They are struggling with their religious beliefs because of their gender identity issues.
"Can I come home again?" It can either be another religious reference, home I.e. The Church or it can literally mean his home which he may have left on bad terms due to not acting entirely like a boy.
"I'm a boy." They are repeating this to themself to try to suppress their feelings of gender dysphoria.
Pff this is a tricky one for me to understand.
I think from the vocal style its from a childs perspective. The mind like your heart bit is basically telling someone to stop overthinking but then its sad because the persons heart is nailed shut (repressed emotions).
I think theres some religion to it too (do you think jesus loves me?) I know Jonnys parents are devout catholics and he probably wasn't the best role model of a catholic boy (he may have been a bit feminine hence the I'm a boy line) so he questioned his religon at some point.
It could be about his parents I suppose (tell me a sad story so I can fall asleep) and I'll never drop my sword could mean he won't give up his own personal faith.
this song is awesome. i always thought he meant a sword was a metal cock. like even if your not macho your still a man.
