Some Things Don't Wash Out Lyrics

I think I tried to wake up too fast
From what must have been a two-year nap.
Then I hit my head
And it was back to bed for a while.

I woke up 24 in Texas,
Breaking a sweat to expand my nexus
Then it occurred to me,
Maybe I shouldn't be
Making excuses to cope so liberally.

They say, "Some things just don't wash out,"
but I've been dying to know what getting clean is all about.
And now, years have gone by,
but it's still stuck in my mind:
Some things just don't wash out.

For too long now, I've sung the same sad song
But I didn't even write it, I was just singing along.
But the problem with change is it's hard
Like finding lively conversation in graveyards.

I hit the nail on the head,
Drove it straight through my hand.
I have martyred myself in a scheme not-so-grand.
We're deserving of men left to rot in a rag,
Haven't done shit with my life,
My skin is starting to sag.

You drink too much.
Your mind's unfit.
You really can't afford to live like this.
You're almost there, but still so far.
Everyone.

They say, "Some things just don't wash out,"
but I've been dying to know what getting clean is all about.
And now, years have gone by,
but it's still stuck in my mind:
Some things just don't wash out.

You've gotta dig (deep, deep, deep)
You've got to dig (deep, deep, deep)
You've gotta dig (deep, deep, deep)
You've got to dig (deep, deep, deep)
You've gotta dig (deep, deep, deep)
You've got to dig (deep, deep, deep)
You've gotta dig, you've gotta dig.

They say, "Some things just don't wash out,"
but I've been dying to know what getting clean is all about.
And now, years have gone by,
but it's still stuck in my mind:
Some things just don't wash out.

They say, "Some things just don't wash out,"
but I've been dying to know what getting clean is all about.
And now, years have gone by,
but it's still stuck in my mind:
Some things just don't wash out.

I wasn't previously familiar with the word "Nexus," but after some google searching, it seems it's also linked with travel? So, "woke up 24 in Texas, breaking a sweat to expand my Nexus" could be, you know, he's in Texas sweating in the heat, just to say he's been there.

In general, to me, the song is about getting older and feeling like you're not getting anywhere in your life, and feeling like everyone else thinks you're not getting anywhere, either. That's part of it, at least. And then there's the drug/alcohol references in things "not washing out."

The line, "...making excuses to cope so liberally." I sort of hear "coat" in stead of "cope." Which could tie back to the drugs/alcohol references in "getting clean."

I just love how this band is so clever. "But the problem with change is it's hard Like finding lively conversation in graveyards." ugh, so good.

"Cope" ties back with the drug/alcohol reference, too... As in, you use them to "cope" with your problems, but you used them "so liberally."

ahh, i didn't even think of it that way. okay, that makes sense too, then. thanks!

Once again, I'm not sure about the "Nexus" line... any ideas?

It's "I have 'martyred' myself in a scheme not so grand," not 'mired.'

I think 'Nexus' is right. It's a type of phone, so I took the line to mean he's trying to expand his contacts. But I agree with nellson13, I think it's 'martyred' not 'mired'. Also, a friend of mine watched their ustream thing when they were having people record the gang vocals, and it's 'deep', not 'dig'.

Last time I saw ben, he had just switched to a G1, but he may have switched to a Nexus One because I know he was having problems with his G1 constantly deleting his contacts, which makes the "expand my nexus"/cellphone contacts interpretation all the more interesting haha.

To "expand your nexus" is like "expand your center," i.e. reach a larger demographic with your music in this case.

I fixed the "deep" part, and I, at first, thought nexus was meant to be the phone angle, too, but it's also Latin, so I think he might have been going for that.

I heard "martyred" at first, too, but I still think it's mired... for now.

I changed it to martyred now.

Nexus is definitely not referencing the phone. The definition for nexus is: "a connection or series of connections linking two or more things." That line is about working hard to expand his connections.

i think the line "you really can't afford to live like this" is so sad, it's probably a reference to "livin th dream" and it just reminds you throughout this album that so many people don't believe in them. it's bullshit.
