Map of Tasmania Lyrics
They don't play the song on the radio
They don't show the tits in the video
They don't know that we are the media
They don't know that we start the mania
Your eyes don't want to see but I'm making you
Your ass is off its seat and I'm shaking you
Walking down the street I'm the lady, ah
Showing off my map of Tasmania
Soft and sweet and shaped like a triangle
Some girls want no shape and they shave it all
That's so whack, it hurts with the stubble
Walkin' 'round they look like an eight year old
I say grow that shit like a jungle
Give 'em something strong to hold onto
Let it fly in the open wind
If it get too bushy you can trim
They don't play the song on the radio
They don't show the tits in the video
They don't know that we are the media
They don't know that we start the mania
Your eyes don't want to see but I'm making you
Your ass is off its seat and I'm shaking you
Walking down the street I'm the lady, ah
Showing off my map of Tasmania!

** Also "They don't know that we are the media/ They don't know that we start the mania" gives an air of rebellion against such laws. Palmer believes that the government can try to stop our publishing of materials but can not kill an idea once it is born in the public.
some of the lyrics are wrong, these should be right (Y)

People really need to give up on the "jumping the shark" comment. As someone else said, this song was something Amanda spun out at the last minute and it works, it's awesome and is actually a statement at the same time.
The music style is something so different from Amanda's usual, true. But that shouldn't mean it's branded a last ditch effort. If you watch the live performance on YouTube where she played this song you can see she wasn't sure of the style, I can't guess why she chose this particular style but it works.
For me, this song is about freedom! We are the media!
It seems that you are disregarding a large portion of the song to simply focus on the feminist/pubic hair topic. It is also a comment on various obscenity laws both in the U.S. and worldwide. "They don't play the song on the radio...etc." It is atrocious that the U.S. has the a Constitution and yet is more difficult about what is considered obscene than other countries (i.e. the UK). Obscene materials are NOT protected by the First Amendment as decided in Roth v. United States, 354 U.S. 476.
What this song means to me is that Amanda Palmer has probably jumped the shark.
I have mixed feelings for this song. I am all for singing the joys of choosing for yourself how you want your body to look & feel, and the music video represents it wonderfully. But the music itself is a real let down. The jumping of the shark, as emueyes would say.
I used to love Amanda Palmer. This kind of stuff is making me not so sure. Like others say, it smacks of "jumping the shark".
Also, I'm not sure I completely feel comfortable with the sentiment. Who made it her job to judge whether or not being shaved makes you any less of a woman? It certainly doesn't make you look like an eight year old. As far as I know Amanda makes a bit of a thing about body hair being about choice, so why rag on those of us who make the choice - sometimes - to shave?
She has said that this song is about having the right, and the power, to make the choice. It's not a preachy song where she is saying that being shaved is the wrong choice, she is simply saying it's not her choice. Amanda Palmer is that woman with a strong voice who has never kept her opinions to herself, so she's making a strong statement. But she's also always spoken out for the rest of the women, and she says she's answered to this song quite a bit since writing it and wants people to know it's about choosing.

It...
It was written in about 15 minutes, and is really a fun song. It's not meant to be harmful. If you hear or read anything Amanda has said about this song, she has stressed again and again that the song is for everyone, shaved or unshaved, waxed or hairy.
Exactly as ladydimitria said. Amanda has always faced flack for rarely shaving her legs and arm pits. She's an awesome, confident woman who believes in choice. I'd imagine that she has spent a large portion of her adult life being told that it's wrong for her not to shave so she's just shouting from the roof tops that either way is good, it's all about personal choice.

Also? It absolutely does make you look prepubescent.

ummmm.... its kind of obvious....
but for those who are ten years old (and i congratulate you for getting into Amanda Palmer so early) its about PUBES and how people get Brazilian too much. Amanda Palmer is clearly a loud feminist and is trying to convey the message that women should be natural: 'I say let that shit grow like a jungle'
Disgusting but amazing at the same time
