Preservation Lyrics

That night he hurt you bad
In that green, pastel
summer dress
You'd die alone with the land
A hollow head in its hands
But everybody does that
But with particular scorn,
in polyurethane form,
freeze dried, stuff to the brim

- Preservation

Hide in our hideous masks
Your daddy's shitty
shake grass
I told you I couldn't see it
A monument of pills,
grocery lists, telephone bills,
pamphlets & dollar
store trinkets

- Preservation

But if that was how you put
it, and if you ever willed it,
I would embroider you
In disaffected kisses, in
bleach reticent sunsets,
soldered animal glue

A hand too heavy to hold
Lips that won't
do what they're told
How do we ever begin it?
How do we grow old?

- Preservation

Was wondering if anyone had an opinion as to the meaning of the lyrics to this wonderful song.

my personal interpretation of this song is that he is speaking to a ?friend/girlfriend?, someone who has known some unhappiness in early life as apparently he has, grown up in challenging circumstances and is trying to find a way to drop what was bad and preserve what was good; trying to find themselves in an unfriendly world, fighting things like addiction (your daddy's shitty shake grass sounds like a pot reference to me, if i ever heard one lol) and the emptiness that plagues modern life (the many references to plastic coatings, freeze-drying, grocery lists and telephone bills, etc, evokes this simply but powerfully).

one of my favourite bands of all-time, and canadian! very proud of the excellent music that this country manages to produce--one of the few worthwhile contributions to the world that a nation can make that i think is worthy of being proud of.
