Chop and Change Lyrics
an innocent child in new orleans
a simple girl from simple means
walked the rails
rode her thumb
she hitched a ride with everyone
the regular, she'd rearrange
the girl knew how to chop and change
chop and change
chop and change
chop and change
chop and change
took a job workin late
jackin cars from out of state
she found no love in this town
so she'd never mess around
had no luck(?), but aint it strange
the girl knew how to chop and change
a simple girl from simple means
walked the rails
rode her thumb
she hitched a ride with everyone
the girl knew how to chop and change
chop and change
chop and change
chop and change
chop and change
jackin cars from out of state
she found no love in this town
so she'd never mess around
had no luck(?), but aint it strange
the girl knew how to chop and change

I can't believe nobody has commented on this song yet! such a good song, easily one of my favorites. I love the female voice in the background.
I could listen to this song over and over again. It's so sexy. Everything in it is so well put together. I bless the day I came across Blalocks Indie/Rock Playlist...I found this song there and now I am addicted to this band.
perhaps this one is about a girl who worked in a chopshop (one of those illegal places where stolen cars were dismantled and their pieces were rearranged, sold) but I don't know it there's any hidden meaning in this song...it sounds great, though :)
This song was written for "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse." Summit gives each artist on the soundtrack a subject to write their song for the soundtrack about. I'm guessing this song has something to do with the character Bree (the young vampire who Carlise and Esme save during the fight between the newborns and the Cullens/werewolves). If you read the Eclipse Novella, "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner," it explains that Bree's life was quite similar to the girl Black Keys are describing in "Chop and Change."
weighing in late but I'd always heard the term used for someone who changes their mind a lot. I looked it up and found the following, fwiw.
Definition of chop and change British, informal : to keep changing one's mind, way of doing something, etc. You have to make a decision and stick with it. You can't chop and change all the time.
Chop and change means something changes over and over again. So, I believe that it means this girl changed many times and probably quite often.
