High life
I was brought up to believe
The universe has a plan
We are only human
It's not ours to understand
I was brought up to believe
The universe has a plan
We are only human
It's not ours to understand
The universe has a plan
All is for the best
Some will be rewarded
And the devil will take the rest
All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold
Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to death
In a world of cut and thrust
I was always taught to trust
In a world where all must fail
Heaven's justice will prevail
The joy and pain that we receive
Each comes with its own cost
The price of what we're winning
Is the same as what we've lost
All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold
Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to death
Until our final breath
The joy and pain that we receive
Must be what we deserve
I was brought up to believe
Until our final breath
The joy and pain that we receive
Must be what we deserve
I was brought up to believe
All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold
Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to
Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to
Loves us all to death

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
It means Neil is going to hell. He's getting bolder and more anti-God the older he gets. Wonder why that is? Maybe because he's getting older, and scared about the God he's going to have to face at the end of his life? "The loving watchmaker" can only save people if they ask him. People themselves created seperation from God when they sinned in the garden, so why does Neil repeated blame God for a predicament that we created? He gave up his son, so that we can escape a fate WE created. God wants no one to go to hell, but if we don't accept him, we will. Neil needs to check his watch, because his time is running out. He will be judged for bringing people down with him with lyrics like this. I like Rush a lot, but this song is insulting to me as a christian, and I love the lord for saving me. Take his hand, and join us in heaven.
Your assuming superiority is most annoying.
@ sleevemeister: You don't come across as "superior". You're simply telling the truth, which is "hard to accept" for people like dirtylemons, whose ignorance is sickening. In fact, people NEED to hear exactly what you said. Jesus tried to get His message out, and it often failed to reach those who need it most. That's why it's so important for us to continue to get that message out today. Jesus said, "The world hates me, and it will hate you because of me." Keep going. If the world (meaning ignorant fools like dirtylemons) hates you, then you're on the right path.
I started writing a scathing reply to sleevemeister, and to ju7281, but I realized that would be pointless.
Instead, all that I will do is wish you well.
I don't hate sleevemeister, I hate the terrible comment. It's one thing to disagree with someone (which I wouldn't have a problem with), but to just outright state that you know someone is going to hell when you very well don't is indeed assuming superiority.
I love Neil's lyrics, even if I don't agree with every aspect of his personal philosophy. And to attack someone simply because they don't hold the same beliefs as you is downright childish.
From The Accounts, I don't recall Jesus ever going up to non-believers and condemning them. He wanted them to follow, but He didn't say "You sickeningly ignorant fools, you are going to hell." In fact, I only recall Him condemning the religious fools who claimed to be believers while living lives that were mockeries of holiness.
See, if sleevemeister's comment had read like a personal testimony of their own beliefs without attacking Neil, I would have left it alone (might even have rated it up). But as it stands, it's a sickening mockery of Christianity, and as a true believer, I believe such comments should not go unchallenged.
@dirtylemons You proclaim tolerance while you defend Neil's lyrics that accuse God himself of sending people to hell? "Until our final breath While our loving Watchmaker Loves us all to death" I guess Neil gets a pass on insulting God himself?
"Jesus said, “Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” You might want to read up on what Jesus said about bearing false witness. The penalty for false witness against God is very plain in the bible.
Matt 7: 13 Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Matt 12:36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.
Luke 13:22-30 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’ “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth
John 12:48-50 If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.
