Big Difference Lyrics
The quiet kid has come to stay
What did he say?
He says I'm lonely, says I'm lonely
I'll tell you everything I know
What do you know?
He says I'm hopeless, says I'm hopeless
And that's why I can't send you Christmas cards
It's why I had to keep you in the dark
Less big words and more exclamation marks
The little king is locked away (locked away)
Swallow the key
He says it's alright, but not sorry
I'll tell you everything I saw (what do you see?)
A hundred and one
He says it's alright, but I know what I've done
And that's why I can't send you Christmas cards
It's why I had to keep you in the dark
Less big words and so ...
Charmed but destroyed
Opens up a window
Bored and overwhelmed
Always overwhelmed
But that's the best part, that's the best part
'Cause I've been taking your advice
Like a Speak & Spell
And I can get to know you better
And never know you well
And that's why I can't send you Christmas cards
It's why I had to keep you in the dark
Less big words and so ...
Charmed but destroyed
Opens up a window
Bored and overwhelmed
I was overwhelmed
But that's the best part, that's the best part
What did he say?
He says I'm lonely, says I'm lonely
What do you know?
He says I'm hopeless, says I'm hopeless
It's why I had to keep you in the dark
Less big words and more exclamation marks
Swallow the key
He says it's alright, but not sorry
A hundred and one
He says it's alright, but I know what I've done
It's why I had to keep you in the dark
Less big words and so ...
Opens up a window
Bored and overwhelmed
Always overwhelmed
But that's the best part, that's the best part
Like a Speak & Spell
And I can get to know you better
And never know you well
It's why I had to keep you in the dark
Less big words and so ...
Opens up a window
Bored and overwhelmed
I was overwhelmed
But that's the best part, that's the best part

The quiet kid/little king is having troubles dealing with life and its issues. He feels lonely and hopeless, but at the same time don't want to worry/disappoint a close friend or family member; that's why he can't send them Christmas cards (that are usually happy and full of all the promising things that happened during the past year) and is isolating himself from them. Even though he knows you could never tell if you really know someone and all the things they are going through, he wishes there could be more emotions and less politeness and formality.

I love this song, probably close to my favourite on the CD...
less big words and more exclamation marks << Love this line.
Such a tragedy though, each time I've seen them they don't play it :(
So as I was sitting here listening to the song and reading the lyrics over and over again, I thought about a few things that could be related but I can't decide were they are connected. The "quiet kid, and the little king" are some kind of shy childlike character (maybe the writer or someone else). The chorus on the other hand I have a pretty good idea about. To me they are about someone that he (the writer) can't tell to much to, because they get worried easily and he has to "keep them in the dark". Perhaps this is person is the same as the childlike character from the verses. That's all I have for now though, I hope someone will comment and help me piece it together.
