i'm guessing this song is about Eric Nally's relationship with his own father, versus Nally's relationship with his son(s) Julian and Francis.
perhaps that Nally's father disproved of his decisions/direction in life, because his musical pursuits and because he started his own family that he has to concentrate on.
i think it's "to link us heart to heart" instead of "them guts"
