This song seems to be a reflection on solipsism. That is the notion that only one's own mind is sure to exist. This is evident in several lines:
"Are their patterns in the skies? / Are the patterns only in our eyes?" - Questioning the reality of what he sees and his tendency to look for meaning in the stars. "Or is a constellation just a constellation? / Is a constellation just a consolation?" - Again questioning if the stars are real or if they are just an illusion to console his mind.
