Here's something interesting.

The longer you go without something (be it food, water, shelter, company, whatever) the more you're going to appreciate that thing while you have it. To me, it's sounding like the song is from the narrator to his love interest. He's been without love for a long time, and through all the shit he's endured, he still loves her genuinely (hence: "That's why I hold you, that's why I hold you dear"). Even though life might be bad, he still has her.

After several listens, this is what I hear:

My guess it is about being promiscuous and having a fear of commitment, the partner however knows what is going on and the narrator doesn't even feel like he has to be very inconspicuous anymore because he knows he/she puts up with it and will still be there regardless.

so..first: that's my favorite song of this great album... it reminds me hands away for the way that the song progress with more and more power, energy, intensity...till the end...so here's just my opinion : for me, it's about "trying a new drug", something that looks really, really cool but with fears cause it's new so you never know how you gonna react. for the musical part, you've got some reserves and fears cause you don't know what's gonna happen and then you go to the great "travel"...so it's calm, you're clean before to do the "great jump" and for the lyrics:

if maybe the effect that it makes on you is different that the effect on me, don't leave me alone with my trip, talking to much with a great conviction (like on cocaine, a thing that the band already knows)...what if i stay forever in my trip? now that you know all that I think(and fear) about this thing, let's forget it, (i feel that is coming), that's why i hold you... I was strong with other drugs, as you seen...i have the experience, enough, so i can deal with it like you do even if i reveal another side of me, you know how i am so you will adapt yourself

how i feel ? what's the effect? i m thinking about bad stuff, bad feelings about myself that we're inside of me and not so capital in the daily life but now that i m high, it looks important (ironic)...the problem is my age, i'm not feeling good about it so help me to deal with it, I just have a bad "trip" about it..

He rationalizes that his infidelity or other misbehavior is OK because she knows about it and lets it go. So by the end of the song he has not been fixed, he has won her over. They have settled into a relationship where she chooses not to confront him over his problem but can't look him in the eye because of it.

This is just from my interpretation of it, but I'm fairly certain that's the essence of it.

It seems like it could have a heavy religious overtone (as much as I'd like that not to be the case, at least with these gentlemen), or perhaps the "hold you" is a reference to memory or love of someone dear to him. Self betterment, escape, and healing; what I'm pulling from this.

Just a couple pennies, though.
