Long Shadows Lyrics
I'm not afraid of the dark; we've been here before,
fallen on hard times, Honey, we've fallen on swords
So if a long shadow falls across your heart,
I'll be right here with you -- I'm not afraid of the dark.
I'm not afraid of the dark when the sun goes down
and the dreams grow teeth and the beasts come out and cast their long shadows
every time they start I'll be right here with you -- I'm not afraid of the dark.
Out on the hills, the hounds are baying
out on the moor, the foxes run
to stay alive until the light has faded,
then pray for light that seems so long to come.
I'm not afraid of the dark, so if the stars get scarce and you reach for him --
and, Honey, he's not there -- just a long shadow across your heart
you can reach for me -- I'm not afraid of the dark.

I'm curious if anyone has thoughts on who 'him' is in this line. It sounds like someone reaching out for someone for comfort and not finding them.
"I'm not afraid of the dark, so if the stars get scarce and you reach for him -- and, Honey, he's not there -- you can reach for me"
I first thought it was reference to reaching out to your spouse/partner/significant other, and suggesting you'll find comfort with me instead of who you are with. But that doesn't seem like Josh.
Then I wondered if it had to do with faith. If you reach for him in times of darkness, with him being god or any religion? Reach for me instead when you find that god's not there.
I would say the phrase "to stay alive until the light has faded then pray for light that seems so long to come" tells us that "him" can be any symbol of salvation. Jesus would certainly be one but it is whoever "honey" would turn to hoping for salvation when the time comes.

I thought it was a significant other as well, but I like your interpretation much better.
