this song is so beautiful. to me, i think it's about that moment before you fall asleep at night, and all is so calm and peaceful, then your thoughts drift to someone who you think fondly of, hence "when my thoughts drift to you".

I love this song. I immediately loved it the first time I heard it. It doesn't even matter what the songs about when you feel the music in your bones.

This is a beautiful song. I beleive this song is about a man who is experiencing his last few moments before death. Thoughts are coming to him of his life... the good things, the simple things, the bad. Several lines in the song lead me this conclusion:

Now there's something here before me A figure, I think Isn't there a warning Or something to drink My god, my god

Others came before me Others to come, to come

His last thoughts before dying are of the one his loves and longs for the most....

Pyner55 is right- this song is a man in his last moments, thinking over his entire life. The people he loved, his family and friends, and even more 'intense' thoughts like "others came before me, others to come" ...then, before he draws his last breath, his mind drifts to his final thought. Her.

Well, I believe this song is about a romantic love anyway. It could be interpreted as something else.

Such a great song. Reminds me of a old lost love from high school. Very beautiful.

Another fantastic song - very atmospheric. I my opinion the song is definetly about death. It reminds me of the famous poem "Because I could not stop for death" by Emily Dickinson. The title alludes to a sense of infinity - i.e the absoluteness of death. The image of arms holding them forever. The speaker is addressing God in the song. In the first verse the persona imagines their life in a different pespective - a different gender in fact if the persona is a man. There is a reference to an injury - which is again repeated in the final verse. The speaker can see their family, friends and possessions. Their thoughts drifting could be to God - without control. The second verse has stronger imagery of death and is more reflective, retrospective - a figure appears in front of them. After-life experiences often depict the idea of a person, a shadow approaching and accompaning them to the heaven. In this verse the persona seems to want a formality to their death, a party, a "warming" and a "drink" before going to the other side. The persona speaks out "My God", and again their mind drifts away. The final verse mentions the mended bones - the injury from the first verse perhaps? Only now they are healed, another common interpretation of death, that ones injuries disappear. The image of storms and the sea again tell the listener that he is floating away somewhere. The image of the animal below them alludes to this idea of floating, drifting away into the storm clouds. The song does have a romantic, swirling nature about it. And it does make you reflect on your own life and loves. I'm sure Bridwell has purposefully allowed an open interpretation here. His songs can often be interpreted in several ways. Beautifully writtesn as usual. A highly underated band. Much loved here in Australia though.

Listen to the version of this on Q TV on youtube. It made me cry and I don't cry to songs much.

As for the meaning, I agree with everything said above. Multiple interpretations allowed but most definitely about death.

i agree that this song is about death. but i think the melancholy mood of the song isnt created by thinking about death but instead dying without that person he remembers.
