I think this is a retrospective on that relationship you had in high school, where you really thought it would work: thought you'd get married, etc. But it fell apart.
Agreed. Brian has said his "first wife" (ie Great Expectations, so I'd assume this song too) is someone who he had a relationship with when he was younger. The relationship was, to him (at that point in his life), very much like a marriage. He thought he'd be with her forever.

Fantastic Song. This whole album is great, just like the 59 Sound
He's definitely remembering an important romance from when he was younger. He feels like he has another shot with his love and he's promising to be a better man now that he's grown a bit and holds a better grasp on life. He wants her to remember the love they had and the times they shared in NY; wants the memories of all the special moments to come rushing back and wants her to look at him with those loving eyes once again. He knows that he wasn't good for her back then, but that she loved him truly. That no matter who else she's been close to, he still holds that power over her and is the only one that can remove the pain that he inflicted. He knows that he is still close in her heart and never far in her thoughts. He's ready and waiting for her to come back and give him another chance.

Must say, I live in NY and I know owe my current love life to the GLA. This song speaks the story of my past relationship. I was dating her and well didnt work to well, a few weeks ago I decided i still liked her, now I went up to her the other night nd I asked her to date me again and i sang the song (how corny)

Being a teenager in new york we party alot, and well i cant dance. Also she lives uptown i live down so we always chill on her party scene
