Fool's Day Lyrics
Wake up straight
Caught out by the sun
On the first day of April
Out of bed
Thought it was a plane crash
But I'm sure that I was dreaming
Tv on
Of course caffeine
A science of submission again
Another day
On this little island
Just a bell hangs on
Porridge done
I take my kid to school
Pased the pound shop, Woolworth's
Under bridge
Where the subway sees the daytime
And the Westway flies by
Then on my bike
Down the Ladbroke Grove
To the forthcoming dramas
A studio
And a love of all sweet music
We just can't let go
Let go, let go, let go, let go
So meditate
On what we've all become
On a cold day in springtime
Civil war
Is what we were all born into
Raise your left hand, right, sing
Don't capitulate to the forces
Of the market place
They've long departed
Consolidate
The love we have together
On a cold day in springtime
Caught out by the sun
On the first day of April
Thought it was a plane crash
But I'm sure that I was dreaming
Of course caffeine
A science of submission again
On this little island
Just a bell hangs on
I take my kid to school
Pased the pound shop, Woolworth's
Where the subway sees the daytime
And the Westway flies by
Down the Ladbroke Grove
To the forthcoming dramas
And a love of all sweet music
We just can't let go
On what we've all become
On a cold day in springtime
Is what we were all born into
Raise your left hand, right, sing
Of the market place
They've long departed
The love we have together
On a cold day in springtime

First comment on a song? This feels awesome. :) I'm loving Blur's newest single and I can't wait to see more! And just when I thought we weren't going to hear any new Blur.
The tune is much simpler than deeper meanings assumed. It is reminiscent of that older Blur 'daily-observance of British life' Parklife-style of writing a la Madness and The Kinks. While no doubt some lines are not immediately understandable or may be symbolic/personal to Damon, this seems quite straight forward to me: Blur have gotten back together in early 2010 to cut a single. Damon's daily routine on the way to the studio is reflected in the lines - waking up, tv on, coffee/tea, breakfast, kids to school, biking to the studio, etc.
The latter part of the song really hits on the 'reunion' of Blur.
zum's on the money.
Albarn blends the old observations of English day to day life ("on this little island", Ladbrook Grove) with an awareness of himself, Blur and how the four members of the band have grown and changed:
"So meditate On what we've all become On a cold day in springtime
Civil war Is what we all were born into Raise your left hand, right, sing"
It's quite optimistic about the future of the band.
so happy that blur is putting a new album out! favorite band! saw damon albarn at coachella with gorillaz and nearly died. hope he comes to san diego with blur!
i think it's pretty obvious what this song is about. self explanatory for the most part. favorite lyric: "out of bed/ thought it was a plane crash/ but i'm sure that i was dreaming". so many meanings i can't choose! i think he's referring to bad dreams but also living in the modern world as it is, and how we get so scatterbrained and distraught because our morals don't agree with most of the generic lifestyle that when we wake up we think it's all been just some plane crash. but still, you're not sure if you've been dreaming. go blur!
Sort of like how modern life distracts from real love? I get you.

This song will always remind me of Lost, because I first heard it near when Lost was ending and the lyrics remind me of parts of the show.
e.g. "plane crash" -obvious! "But I'm sure that I was dreaming"- SO many referenes to dreaming "science"- science v. faith. "another day on this little island" -well, yeah. repetition of "let go"- fairly significant in terms of the last episode. "what we've all become"- changes to the people on island. "what we were all born into"- themes of destiny "the love we have together"- the importance of love for constants etc.
obviously the song isn't really about lost, but it reminds me of it, so yeah.
