Well, this is my interpretation, but I think the song means (when said in first verse: it seems like a bad break-up between two people. Then, one person remembers how the world taught them how to show no mercy type attitude. Then throughout the middle and end verses that same one person apologieses and reassures the other person in the relationship and tells them "I will be here..."
