Laredo Lyrics

Gonna take a trip to Laredo
Gonna take a dip in the lake
Oh, I'm at a crossroads with myself
I don't got no one else

And possibilities at the door
I won't be needing them anymore
Oh, is this the first time in your life
It's hard just to get by

Oh, my love, don't you even know?
Oh, my love, are you really gone?

Can you see the world through a window?
Are you having troubles in droves?
Oh it ain't the worst thing I could do
Is get back home to you

I put a bullet in my Kia Lorenzo
A kitchen knife up to my face
Throw me in the deep of Jammer Lake
Believe me when I say

Oh, my love, you don't even call
Oh, my love, is that you on the phone?

Oh, my love, you don't even know
Oh, my love, are you really gone?

Wow, that 2nd part of the second verse is a nightmare to decipher!

It's definitely A KITCHEN KNIFE UP TO MY FACE (as if that nice Ben would swear!!)

Now, there's no such thing as a KIA LORENZO - there is a KIA dealership at LORENZO, TEXAS but isn't it more likely he says KEY AT LORENZO????

There's no JENNER LAKE in Texas, there is a Jenner Pond Lake in Sonoma, CA - but who knows?

Let's hope the CD has lyrics - I doubt it though!!

Lyric Correction

yeah, the second verse is so strange!

good call with 'up to my face'

as for Kia Lorenzo, and Jenner Lake, I really don't know. I'm not sure how you can put a bullet in a key per se.

the details in the second verse seem to be very Laredo-centric, and I feel like a local would fare much better at recognizing them. (or maybe not...)

I think you have the lyrics right. the Kia Lorenzo line is either he put a bullet in his kia, Lorenzo or "kia lorenzo" i like the second better also jenner lake is in ontario. btw this song rocks and i cant wait for the album to release

I'm from Laredo, Texas. Our lake is Lake Casa Blanca. I wouldn't suggest swimming in it . You'll probably come out with 20 fishing hooks stuck in you. I don't know about the Kia Lorenzo thing. Maybe it is meant to be Kia, Lorenzo. Not sure. It could be about a diffrent Laredo, and not Laredo, TX.

First of all, I love the song! If it were possible to wear out a track on my iPod I would have by now. Like many others, I've been trying to piece together the song. Why would a band from seattle give a crap about Laredo? Someone mentioned Jammer Lake in Minnesota, then it occurred to me: If you head directly south of Jammer Lake on the state highway, it connects to I-35 with a direct route to Laredo. There are lots of songs about people running away to Mexico, so... Well, just a thought. I'm probably thinking about this too much. =)

All you have to do is look at Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laredo_%28song%29 . When Bridwell wrote this song, he was in Minneapolis and was lonely. Hence the Jenner Lake reference.

If you were stuck alone somewhere and lonely, wouldn't you possibly want to go somewhere, either to be around people, or just to get away...?

There are definitely suicidal sounding statements in here, but I guess they're figurative?

I thought it was "Jammer Lake"? I've been there. But yeah great song and nails that angsty, loneliness and isolation that peeps feel from time to time.

"Put a bullet in my Kia , Lorenzo" - why do some here think it's so odd that he named his car Lorenzo? It's not the tires!

"Kitchen knife up to my face" the censoring in the video is probably for the implied drug reference not "fucked to my face" which makes no sense.

I love the guitar harmonizing during the bridge.

So, after having this song stuck in my head all week, I was also curious about some of the lyrics. It hit me when I pulled up the song video from metacafe which was different from the video I had previously seen. It is a collection of black and white pictures from what appears to be a 'road trip'. I paused on one of the first road signs which shows an intersection of Hwy 395 with Carson City to the left and Coleville to the right. Why is this all relevant you might ask? That is a road which is in or near Eldorado National Forest. Phonetically... if you say Eldorado with a strong A sound, it can sounds a lot like Laredo. ie. "Gonna take a trip ta eldarAdo" All of the images in the black and white video from Metacafe seem to show places all around this area. Also if you wiki El Dorado there might be some reference there too.

Thinking about it more.. this might have been a bit of a stretch, but I think both videos were probably shot in the same areas in So Cal/Nevada... nothing to do with Texas.

There is a line of (fancy) Lorenzo wheels for the KIA. Maybe thats what it's about.

no no no no...KEY!

Thought this one was pretty straight forward. He's lost someone, most likely they died.
He is confused, alone and is taking a road trip looking for answers. He's also contemplating suicide (the gun, the knife, talking about drowning in the lake). The part about putting a bullet in his Kia could be a symbol of frustration.

Anyone else think this?

My Interpretation

Yes. That verse to me means is all about doing something drastic.

Bullet in my KEY...... why does everyone think Ben would sing about a bloody Kia??!?

i just typed "Lorenzo" into the search engine and the second result that came up was for a brand of wheels for cars. so that possibly makes a bit more sense along side Kia.

er, no it doesn't

Yours is the first answer that makes sense! Sure, he shot the tire of his car, that DOES sound like something an upset guy would do!! Thanks for the info.

The sixteenth line down may very well be "A kitchen knife fucked to my face". I was watching the music video on Comcast and they edited the line out.

One rare song for which the specific meaning has always been irrelevant to me. This song has always sounded so melancho
