perhaps a guy in a relationship inwhich he is far to possesive, he needs her spoken reasurrance that she won't defy him, most likely cheat on him. she's manipulated by him or loves him to much to leave. he finds it hard to forgive her actions but his possesive nature is surely just as bad, perhaps he finds he has to watch her and be so possesive as to stop her doing him wrong, but likely this posessive nature gives her reason to betray him. maybe the relationship ends around half way through the song but he remains strong in the promises they made and that he is just as posessive as a friend than as a boyfriend and so she continues to dettach herself from him
