One Touch Lyrics

I don't think that we will be pleased with this
We have waited for a long time
I recall the promises made to us
We've been patient for a long time

One touch is never enough
You gave the opening, opening
One touch is never enough
People who need people, to the back of the bus

I don't see how we could be pleased with this
We've been waiting for a long time
I recall the promises made to us
We've been patient such a long time

No one is dangerous
We are not dangerous
Unless we get a closer view

One touch is never enough
People need to move to the back of the bus
One touch is never enough
Complicated people never do what you're told to

One touch is never enough
People will need this in the back of the bus
One touch is never enough
People who need people are just people who need people

One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough
People who need people are just people who need people

I don't think that we will be pleased with this
We have waited such a long time
There's no way that we can be pleased with this
We've been waiting such a long time

We've been waiting such a long time
We've been waiting such a long time
This is getting sort of unreasonable
But we've been waiting a very long time

One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough

One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough
One touch is never enough
People who need people, to the back of the bus

No one is dangerous
No one is dangerous
Until we get a closer view

I imagine as this as being a song about educated 20-something urban (i.e. - hipster) lifestyle, focusing on the passive aggressive nature of dealing with problems. There's the "I don't see how we could be pleased with this," which is a sort of passive aggressive of saying "this is unacceptable." I imagine it likely involves waiting to be seated, or waiting for food at, a restaurant. The "people need to move to the back of the bus" is on the same vein. If you've ridden the bus in a large city enough, that always seems to happen where, when it gets really crowded, the people at the back won't move back anymore when those at the front are trying to get on, so someone always ends up yelling something like this, at no one in particular, so as not to cause a direct confrontation, but rather act as a defacto authority figure. In that way, this song is an interesting sociological analysis, looking at how our society has evolved to one that has a majority of individuals who expend energy to avoid conflict with the minority who would cause it. If that makes sense.

Like a creepier version of "Sound of Silver"...almost like it's from the perspective of the most desperate dancefloor patron ever.

"Complicated people never do what you're told to" should be "complicated people never do what you tell them too"

This whole album sounds like he's in a relationship with an asexual person who doesn't want to have sex with him. To me this song is the most obvious.

It's like he meets her in Dance Yrself Clean, gets drunk with her in Drunk Girls, struggles with the lack of sex in One Touch, seeks understanding in All I Want, makes compromises in I Can Change, understands and respects her perspective in Pow Pow and talks about a future with her in Somebody's Calling Me and Home. You Wanted a Hit doesn't quite fit in but I like this interpretation anyway.

I'm probably hearing this just because I'm asexual, but music is meant to be interpretable in different ways.

My Interpretation

@callaSAURUS I like the linear analysis of the album here.

I think this song is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the frustrations of Christianity. They've been waiting for Christ's return since the time of his existence as promised in the testaments, all the while feeling that One encounter with the son of God was not enough. In anticipation of his return, the followers went on a quest to spread the word and fight their perception of evil (Think of the way Christianity influenced earlier science, leadership, and Europe in general for arguably the worse). "People will be pushed to the back of the bus" is a pun on how Christian influence spreads like getting shoved to the back of a bus carrying everyone in the same direction and all expecting the same destination. And the ones who speak up or ask hard questions are considered complicated people who don't do what you tell them to.
