I believe this is a song about someone realizing all the good moments they've had with one particular person. The words that were spoken by "dim half light" represent the unsure feelings that he has towards their current status. The "scattered flashes of delight" represent fleeting moments of happiness that can't help but persuade him that everything is going to be alright. Even if just for a split second.

I think think this song is about someone, a close friend maybe, changing. There's nothing he can do about it, he's just looking on while it happens.
