Ahhh Good Country Lyrics

i thought our brother ??
it should be a leader
who kept them all in green and red
should not be allowed to be free

cause this land of mine beats still
the place would rise above us
to tear your roots up out the earth
and man-made fruits don't ??

ahhh good country
seeds above us
kiss this child and he'll surely wake up
I don't care if
I don't wake up
you'll kiss me and I'll surely wake up

ahhh good country
trees above us
mountain lions gonna surely wake up
child won't fret if
he does wake up
you'll see me and we'll surely make up

ahhh good country
seeds below us
kiss this child and he'll surely wake up
don't you fret if
I will wake up
they'll see you then they'll surely make up

Cover art for Ahhh Good Country lyrics by Animal Collective

It sounds to me as if Animal Collective portray a shift from an indulgent kind of view on life and nature (possibly psychotic/manic) to a more practical, mature, independent view on it. It's metaphorical too: the way they perceive nature parallels their own personal growth as human beings.

i thought our brother ?? it should be a leader who kept them all in green and red should not be allowed to be free

This is the Brainstormer stanza. It speaks of the paradoxical forces which move our world: the red (war, violence) and the green (liberal peace). It's about Marxism done correctly; it could very well be about New World Order (the enforcement of equality upon the gullible to achieve world peace). The brother is the politician. The government has not tried to merge the political differences in America. This keeps people ignorantly separated and prejudiced; such people who do not promote peace should not be allowed freedom.

cause this land of mine beats still the place would rise above us to tear your roots up out the earth and man-made fruits don't ??

This is the Theorizer stanza. Artists and bohemians who have plant-like personalities (potheads?) need to rise up and evoke change upon themselves. Stop dreaming and start doing. Continually get out of your comfort zone to grow as a person.

ahhh good country seeds above us kiss this child and he'll surely wake up I don't care if I don't wake up you'll kiss me and I'll surely wake up

This is the Dreamer stanza. At this point, the realization of one's dreams has occurred, yet his actions are still buried. He probably dreams of finding love, romantic or otherwise. He doesn't want to wake up yet; but if someone else enters his life, it will wake him up -- to be able to love and care for another person, one needs someone to give him love and affection first.

ahhh good country trees above us mountain lions gonna surely wake up child won't fret if he does wake up you'll see me and we'll surely make up

Now he stops dreaming and starts accomplishing the dreams (to become musicians and make art). "we'll surely make up" = apologize to others for having shown them such a weak, avoidant, indulgent personality.

ahhh good country seeds below us kiss this child and he'll surely wake up don't you fret if I will wake up they'll see you then they'll surely make up

Now he's ready to raise a child ("seeds below us") or accomplish his own will to help others. He has fully evolved from a hedonistic nature lover to an altruistic realm of transcendence. "they'll surely make up" = become a role model and others will follow your path.
