Remains Lyrics

I can't remember which movie taught me purpose
I can't remember which movie taught me pain

I would've been the one baptized in all your water
I would've been the one submerged under your rain
This is not how I want to be forgotten
This is not how I want to leave remains

I'll give you everything that you need
If you want my blood, let me bleed
If you want a ghost, then that's what I'll be

Was it on Huron when the wind first changed direction?
Was it on Franklin when I lost you on the streets?
All I remember is gray between the cables
Where muted pavement could not give me two feet

I'll give you everything that you need
If you want my blood, let me bleed
If you want a ghost, then that's what I'll be

You already know
What you don't even know
Read the cover, the flap
You just put it back
That's the price we pay
For going in all the way
That's the price we pay
For going in all the way

If you remain in me
I will remain in you
And if you stay with me
I will stay with you

Great song.

Seems to be to be about how two people first meet and start liking each other. After a while they learn some of the darker parts of each other. In this case, it seems that the guy is wounded somehow. Maybe he realizes he has imperfections and flaws or a checkered past (Why are they always checkered? Why not plaid or striped?). Or maybe the girl just doesn't know what she wants. Typical woman. So something happens, the winds change. He loses her. Doesn't matter where or how, maybe on some street in the middle of suburbia hell. And so, after taking one look at the cover and the flap of his 'book', she begins to drift away. All the while, all the guy needs and wants is to belong to someone. And unfortunately or fortunately, only the memories and the thoughts of what could be remain. Not the way I want to be forgotten. (Cristy, if you are reading this, this is about us.) The third line of the song reminds me of the scene in 'Say Anything' where he is talking into his little recorder and driving in the Seattle rain. 'This rain is like a baptism.'- Lloyd Dobbler.

Thanks for posting the additional lyrics! Grammatically, the third and fourth lines should be changed from "I would of been" to "I would have been." The kind of pet peeves a B.A. in English gives you... :-P

Such a beautiful, epic song about a relationship ended too soon. "I'll give you everything that you need / If you want my blood, let me bleed / If you want a ghost, then that's what I'll be." The pain of still wanting to be that person's everything after they've decided they've moved on is so real.

I'm intrigued by the subtle religious references in the baptism imagery and the line "If you remain in me / I will remain in you." May have been unintentional, but grabbed me just the same.

Lyric Correction

i interested in the rel. references as well. either way, such beautiful lyrics: " i would've been the one baptized in all your water / i would've been the one submerged under your rain," and i love when he says "if you remain in me / i will remain in you"

he could just be using it metaphorically... like, using religiosity to confer severity or intensity to the relationship.

*i am interested couldn't just let that go.

You already know What you don't even know Read the cover the flap You just put it back That's the price we pay For going in all the way

I am wondering why he quotes Jesus from the gospel of John 15:4 at the end: "If you remain in me, I will remain in you."

Song Meaning

Several of Matt's songs seem to have a similar theme of losing someone in a relationship, yet they all have a different attitude. Maybe its just me, but this song seems to have a bit of a nonchalant attitude. By that I mean that it just seems like he is kind of accepting that "yeah, this is just another breakup and I'll move on... again." Its like he wants to tell himself that this is not a big deal, but as the song carries on, it comes more and more to the realization that he really doesn't want this to end. He really wants this one to work. "If you remain in me, I will remain in you."
