Compliments Lyrics
I'm fixing a drink in the morning
With the way things are
You may have stayed too long
It's splitting apart at the seam
From the hospital call
You've known him so long
If there's a God up in the air
Someone looking over everyone
At least you've got something to fall back on
Deep in the heart of the country
Was a house I built from logs
A raven and a lady hawk
A quiet and calm through the day
See the sun burn through fog
Approaching was a yellow dawn
If there's a God up in the air
Someone looking over everyone
At least you've got something to fall back on
And what do people really hope?
Does anybody even care?
I bet you get a lot of compliments down there
If there's a God up in the air
Someone looking over everyone
At least you've got something to fall back on
And do you got something to say?
Is there something coming over you?
Do you got important things still left to do?
With the way things are
You may have stayed too long
From the hospital call
You've known him so long
Someone looking over everyone
At least you've got something to fall back on
Was a house I built from logs
A raven and a lady hawk
See the sun burn through fog
Approaching was a yellow dawn
Someone looking over everyone
At least you've got something to fall back on
Does anybody even care?
I bet you get a lot of compliments down there
Someone looking over everyone
At least you've got something to fall back on
Is there something coming over you?
Do you got important things still left to do?

ooh, good catches.

for Line 15 DOG, I was influenced by the music video, which shows a yellow dog at that moment. DAWN, however, fits the tone and lyrics much better

i love band of horses. their style and ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. this song is definitely a great teaser for infinite arms, can't wait!
Ha, I hadn't really paid attention to the video and that IS a yellow dog! But as you say, the lyric IS "dawn" - maybe the guy who did the video misheard (which is pretty funny!) or more likely Ben is playing with the listener (After all this is a guy who wrote a song where he sings EYELIDS WANT TO CLOSE in the chorus and titled the song ISLANDS ON THE COAST - go figure!)
I believe on the inserts with the new albumn... the lric says, "A raven and a lady HAWK"
As for the other lyric... I thought it was dog too?? lol. Who cares... I love the new albumn! Can't wait to see 'em live again. And I hear they're going to be at Austin City Limits this year too. Woohoo!!
New Album is phenomenal as is to be expected from such an experienced and talented band. I was sortof sad no one has any actual input on the meaning of this song just yet...because I am having some trouble...oh well. I'll check back!
"And what are people really for?" Not "hope".
An excerpt from an interview with Ben Bridwell and NME:
This song appears to be a hypothesis on the existence of God. However, frontman Ben Bridwell makes no great claims about the track. "I don't really know what that one is about," he told The NME. "No, really," he continued. "It's not anything about religion or any of that kind of s---t. That's one of the songs that kind of tapped me on the shoulder and wrote itself. I was on a lake among a bunch of trees and s--t and that's just what came out, man. Sometimes they write themselves."
