The Great American T-Shirt Racket Lyrics

Oh
I'll be catchin' stones
it's nothing biblical
'cause I'd never tell you I'm a man of God and leave you with
an out of focus poem
but all the kids know
'cause they've been coddled in the cradle of a barely broken home.

Are you happy now?
You draw a big crowd
car wreck without a sound.
And Arms like attic doors.
Open up, yeah I'd like to join you.
You can talk to God and I'll just watch.
Oh, and I'll just watch..

And he said, "My scars...
Now I have a T-Shirt to go with my...
My scars... yeah now I have a T-Shirt
to go with my..."
So...

When you cash a cheque, do you let it bleed?
Let it breathe, brand it like cattle wearing your marquee.
Everyone can see
You made an emblem
out of "the broken" "the kind of broken" the "I wish I was broken."
'other day, found a boy with a long face,
'said "Sir, I swear, I swear I'm okay.."
Don't need to wish upon the stars..
Now I have a t-shirt, to go with my...
scars.

Oh, my scars...
Now I have a t-shirt, to go with my..
My scars, yeah.. Now I have a t-shirt, to go with my scars..

Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?
Oh, You draw a big crowd!

You count your money in the dead of the night
oh, oh
You've got your very own heaven sent Jesus Christ.
Christ, what's the hell that make me?
parasite, parasite.
Write it anywhere that you'd like.

this song is about to write love on her arms.

i remember ryan said a couple years ago he couldn't stand twloha because of how fake it is, and all it really does is cash in and spread its name while accomplishing nothing, really.

i think the most powerful part is: "you made an emblem out of "the broken" "the kind of broken" the "i wish i was broken." this is so true about everyone i know who supports twloha. it's coming from the people who truly are fucked up, people with some problems (but problems that pretty much everyone goes through), and the people who really aren't suffering at all.

everyone needs to realize twloha is a sham. many people wear it simply to be like "yeah, i cut, and i'm depressed." congratulations. you've got a trendy t-shirt to match your scars that you cause just for attention.

It's about Jason Tate from Absolutepunk.net

hahaha, it almost makes sense. the twloha thing fits so much better though

Couldn't really tell you what I think this song is about, but it fucking rules.

the twloha idea sounds really good, before I saw this i was thinking it was about WWJD shirts but that sounds better. just like to throw out the WWJD idea

cause he mentions God a lot and I thought he was talking about the hypocrisy of organized religion w/ "Open up, yeah I'd like to join you. You can talk to God and I'll just watch. Oh, and I'll just watch.."

"You've got your very own heaven sent Jesus Christ. Christ, what's the hell that make me? parasite, parasite. Write it anywhere that you'd like."
I thought he was saying like if you worship and obsess over Jesus, what does that make you? a parasite. Christian = parasite

cause haha Ryan hates religion

I don't know, I think Ryan has some serious issues with the Christian faith. But it would be drastic to say he hates religion. He's definitely spiritual.

I agree with Kelli. I also have heard that Brian writes alot of the songs not just Ryan. I don't think either of them 'hates' religion. I think EOTC made it quite clear in Lucy Gray in tracks like "If God Smokes Cheap Cigars" and "Vultures" that they have a problem with religion trying to change people and being forced onto people.

i couldnt figure out what this song was about and now that you mention twloha it makes perfect sense, it fits so well. and people do buy those shirts for stupid and fake reasons. good song.

Definitely agree with the twloha idea. Some people also need to realize that just because he mentions God or whatever doesn't mean it's explicitly about religion. They can also be metaphors.

I agree with the twloha idea. But deffinately not the religion idea. If you actually pay attention to their songs, they go back and forth on the possibility of there being a God. Ryan doesn't hate religion. He just has the ideas of a Deis. A religion that acknowlages the idea of the possibility of a God and Jesus. Because if you pay attention to the lyrics of "The Gift of Paralysis" the whole song is talking about God (under the alias of the "doctor").

" "You've got your very own heaven sent Jesus Christ. Christ, what's the hell that make me? parasite, parasite. Write it anywhere that you'd like." I thought he was saying like if you worship and obsess over Jesus, what does that make you? a parasite. Christian = parasite "

That part of the song is talking about how TWLOHA is LIKE Jesus to these people who this they are "depressed". Honestly I agree with EOTC that TWLOHA is a fake. And that people who SEEK attention for their "problems" are just taking help away from those who really need it.

i agree that its about twloha. i think the last line makes it pretty clear.

i'm in complete agreement with the TWLOHA idea as well. For the longest time i thought TWLOHA was a band. If you're going to have a group that helps suicidal individuals, you should reach out with your mission statement a little better than they do (especially since the majority of people i have come across thought they were a band too!!). One visit to their website makes it seem as though they are more in the t shirt business than in the helping people business. It really does seem more like these people get a TWLOHA t-shirt to advocate their suicidal tendencies and get a little sympathy/attention, as if cutting wasnt enough. Hence "now i have a t-shirt, to go with my scars." I've struggled in my life with suicide and depression, and not once did it occur to me that i needed to get me a shirt to commemorate my depression.
