Like I Do Lyrics
I've been getting high
spending nights with
the television on in black and white
in a room that's dressed in red
turning water into wine
with the lady
who must be made of porcelain and fire
and she breathes just like I do
she shivered like a good bride should
And I sweat just like July
Lick the flesh from every bone till we're satisfied
Oh
[chorus]
You should have seen her eyes widen
at the sight of my hands ripping apart those vows
bucket of water for every
match she struck to me
Oh maybe this was meant to be
Lady this was meant to be
Staring in the mirror
without a stitch on
Hands tied 'round her hips
And wondering who is staring back at me?
so we drowned him in the pool, her in the ocean
Buried the bodies in a park just down the street
and then crawled back in bed
she don't shiver like the others do
but she sweats like July
Lick the flesh from every bone 'till we're satisfied
You should've seen her eyes widen
at the sight of my hands ripping apart those vows
bucket of water for
every match she struck to me
Maybe this was meant to be
Lady, this was meant to be, yeah
[x4]

this song is absolutely beautiful, gives me chills. love EOTC <3
My thoughts on this song were actually kind of opposite of what southernpunk777 said. I think this song is about the singer having an affair with someone else who is also married. The singer wants to stay with his mistress and the mistress feels the same. They kill their respective spouses and just go back to each other and continue with their lives together. THe chorus kind of gives it away for me. The first two lines are about his wife's reaction to him cheating. The bucket of water and match metaphor meant to me that she wants to keep trying with their marriage but he keeps putting it down and is giving up.
That's my take on the song.
First of all this is one of the best examples of song writing I've seen in so long. I'm going out on a limb here with what I got from this.. I feel like its a satirical representation sorts talking about rape from the viewpoint of the rapist. I feel like if it was about cheating, the description of "you should have seen her eyes wide at the sight of my hands ripping apart those vows" wouldn't be so harsh. And the last line of the chorus is sort of like mockery, because it's like, this is what he's doing to this poor girl, but from the rapists perspective it's just "Lady, this is meant to be." (Which I also love the informality of 'lady' taken in the context that I understood from it.. completely genius.) In the second verse, talking about staring in the mirror and wondering who is staring back, maybe the rapist is finally starting to think "I wonder who this woman is, what she has going for her in her life, who I am hurting by hurting her." So he kills her and buries her (though I'm not sure who 'him' is referring to?) and then crawls back to his lair relieved of any guilt, goes back to getting high, and staring at the same static tv, still being smothered by lust and violence (both of which the color red represent.)
i agree with norawafai for most of it. i think this is more about him feeling isolated and misunderstood almost. watching the black and white television is like representing not being able to move on fromt he past while the red of the room is like a reminder of his past. the line "and she breathes just like i do" is said almost in reverance, as if he cant believe there is someone else like him. i think they are both meant to be sadistic shallow people, that he has found a woman who either takes pleasure in what he does (thats where the whole rape part comes in) or does the same thing herself. maybe they are both married and when their spouses not only find out they are cheating but doing what they are doing to these poor girls, it is like them basically tearing up their vows in front of them. and now that they no they have to be killed or they will tell. one last thing, when he says "lick the flesh from every bone till we're satisfied" i dont think it is meant to be all conabolistic or anything. i think it is meant to represent either what they are doing to the people they kidnap or what they are doing to each other... get my drift?
I totally agree about what you said. I think you made a great analysis ! Well, even though it's about a sexual disease and murder, this song rocks.

LOVE this song.
btw its "hands tied round her hips"
sounds like a bonnie & clyde thing - a couple in love, killing people. haha :) seriously though, i wonder what the hell inspired these lyrics? anyways, i LOVE it.

"Lick the flesh from every bone till we're satisfied" .... yum?

"so we drowned him in the pool, her in the ocean Bury the bodies in a park just down the street and then crawled back in bed" ... normal.

love ryan's vocals in this song! the meaning is very ambiguous to me at this point.
I thought this was like a dark forgiveness sort of thing. With the breaking of vows line I feel like the song is about a man and his wife who are both cheating on each other. They find out about each others' affairs, and agree, to save the marriage, to kill the other man and woman. Then they climb into their bed and are a happy family.
I think this song is cannibalism and getting high. A couple eating another couple and they got stoned. Who knows the real meaning. Everyone has a different take on it. It's a beautiful song none the less!
I agree with the ideas about adultery but I think everyone is taking the death part too literally. "so we drowned him in the pool, her in the ocean Bury the bodies in a park just down the street and then crawled back in bed" I think it's a metaphor. By cheating they are "killing" their spouses, like breaking their hearts.
Also, in the end the line about getting high. I think it's like getting high off the thrill of cheating. "I've been getting high. And she breathes just like i do" I think the "breaths" are sexual and they are equally thrilled by the recklessness of cheating.
