Me and You Lyrics

Well, I'm back in your good graces again
Remember when you told me that I was your only friend?
Well, you've made the best of this life
Where you never knew one day from the next
Dig your heels in, little girl, put them to the test

You've got to be kind to yourself
You've got to be kind to yourself

Well, I heard you had the blues again
It seems like all those little things add up in the end
Well, I know that you worry a lot about things you can't control
There are so many things we'd like to have
But we just cannot hold

You've got to be kind to yourself
You've got to be kind to yourself

I'd say this song was written for a friend that was depressed and possibly doing themselves harm in some way. When Zooey tried to help, the person probably didn't take it well. But now, the person has forgiven her. In the first verse it seems like the person is doing a bit better, and Zooey urges "her" to keep on fighting to feel good. Put this happiness to the test to see if it will last. Chorus is all reinforcement. "You gotta be kind to yourself." The affected person has to take it easy on themself if they ever want to get better. Depression is like a dead end cycle. If you feel guilty about being depressed, you get more depressed. And harming yourself in any way is never the answer. It appears that the good feelings didn't last because by the second verse, the person has the blues again. They tried to hold up as long as they could, but they let all the little things build up. Zooey just ends the song on a hopeful, urgent note with the chorus again. It's a very good song... open ended, and relatable.

This song is sooooo adorable! Favorite on the new album, hands down.

I think this song is almost cynical and judgemental towards her friend who is always sad.

"Well I'm back in your good graces again" Suggests they fight a lot and he/she pushes Zooey away over stupid stuff "Remember when you told me that I was your only friend?" I think it's saying, why are you pushing me away if I'm all you have left? "You made the best of this life..." The friend is trying their hardest to make the most of a boring lifestyle but their best isn't good enough. The next line to me is not what I think she's saying. I think she's saying "Dig your heels IN a little girl, put em to the test" I suggest she's saying that you're being mean to me to test me but I'm just a little girl. Perhaps even that's the way he/she finds enjoyment out of their life.

"You've got to be kind to yourself" Try to build your self esteem so you don't have to tear others down
