Farewell, Mona Lisa Lyrics
Wash it down the drain
Down the drain
Wash your smile down
Wash it down the drain please
Like animals destined for fuel or observance
Our role is clear, never stray far from the path
Everything has an end
But what am I supposed to say?
Oh sorry, I guess I forgot
You think you could tell me again, please?
I don't remember
What am I supposed to think?
What am I supposed to feel?
There's no feeling in this place
The echoes of the past speak louder than
Any voice I hear right now
Don't you ever try to be
More than you were destined for
Or anything worth fighting for
There's no feeling in this place
What did you expect
That we would never leave home?
That we would never leave?
What did you expect
That we would never leave home?
That we would never leave?
What did you expect from us?
We're murderers
Murderers and liars and rapists and thieves
You should never put your trust in any of us
There is nothing to gain from this interference
Don't you ever try to be
More than you were destined for
Or anything worth fighting for
There's no feeling in this place
The past speaks louder than anything I hear right now
Down the drain
Wash your smile down
Like animals destined for fuel or observance
Our role is clear, never stray far from the path
Oh sorry, I guess I forgot
You think you could tell me again, please?
I don't remember
What am I supposed to think?
What am I supposed to feel?
The echoes of the past speak louder than
Any voice I hear right now
Don't you ever try to be
More than you were destined for
Or anything worth fighting for
There's no feeling in this place
That we would never leave home?
That we would never leave?
What did you expect

Farewell, Mona Lisa is a statement to the portion of fans and music industry that hold everything DEP has done in comparison to Calculating Infinity.
The beginning lines -
Wash it down the drain, down the drain Wash your smile down YEAH!!! Wash it down the drain PLEASE!!! Like it or not this is what fuel our obsessions (or insurgents?) I'm always dreaming(?), never stray far from the path.
Everything was taught to me(?) But what am I supposed to say? What am I supposed to say? I'm sorry I guess I forgot You think you can kill me again? Guess I don't remember
What am I supposed to think? What am I supposed to think? What am I supposed to feel? What am I supposed to feel?
The main lines here in my view would be
Wash it down the drain never stray from the path I guess I forgot I don't remember.
This part of the song is frantic in that the message being conveyed in an angry bitter expression to the people who want everything to sound like Calculating Infinity (wash the smile down), that nothing on Miss Machine or Ire Works matters (wash it down the drain) and that they need to get back to their "roots" but they "can't remember" how.
The next part of the song is the breakdown. The realization that even though they had put out award winning albums and had done everything possible to broaden their fan base and put on amazing shows, that they will always only be remembered for Calculating Infinity and seen as having "sold out"
There's no feeling in this place. The echoes of the past speak louder than Any voice I hear right now. Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for Or anything worth fighting for Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for Or anything worth fighting for There's no feeling in this place There's no feeling in this place Feeling in this place
The lack of feeling is the apathy they feel is projected towards them and the older albums (echoes of the past) are anyone still want them for. The inability to do anything more than your "destiny" is a soul shattering realization that is haunting the group, that their destiny is to put out the same math-core stuff over and over again.
What did you expect? That we were nearly home, that we would never leave What did you expect, that we would never leave home? That we would never leave, that we would never leave That we would never leave, that we would never leave What did you expect from us, we're murderers Murderers and liars and rapists and thieves You should never put your trust in any of us There is nothing to gain from this interference
Don't you ever try to be more than you were destined for Or anything worth fighting for There's no feeling in this place The past is louder than anything I hear right now The past is louder than anything I hear right now
The final part brings back the anger. "WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? That we would never leave home?!" begs the question that why would so many people want the same album over and over again - why would they stay "home" their entire career and not leave to try to better themselves?
The self-loathing then becomes evident in calling themselves liars, rapists, murderers, and screaming what did everyone expect of them in the first place this is who they have always been and they hate themselves for it now. The final screams end with the same curse of the past being louder than anything and that this album too will still be compared to Calculating Infinity.
This album is amazing. Miss Machine is a masterpiece. Ire Works is amazing. The "hardcore community" needs to realize that Calculating Infinity is it's own thing and that they are not going back to that. One of the greatest bands ever.
I agree with everything you said, except the part near the end where he says "we're murderers and liars and rapists and thieves", I don't think it's necessarily self-loathing, but sarcasm. Like, he's saying what all the people who only like Calculating Infinity seem to think of the band as now.

You got the lyrics wrong in the beginning ...... not to be an asshole but think the actual words would mean something different.....anyway its..... "Like animals, destined for fuel or observance....... our role is clear, never stray far from the path..... everything has an end.......everything must come to an end..... but what am I supposed to think" I had a completely different take on the song, but I find it interesting that you got all that from it...... weird how people can perceive the same thing in such different ways ; )

@ aguitarandaheart, I think you've got some of it right, but I don't know if it's only about their music and directed at fans. I think it could be broader than that, and I think when they say "don't you every try to be more than you were destined for or anything worth fighting for," I think it's very facetious, a caustic, biting remark showing how asinine it is when people think they know what your purpose is in life better than you do. I'm sure part of the inspiration was directed at fans, but who knows who else may have contributed to this amazing tirade of a song.
This is closer to how I interpret the song. Also it greatly reminds me of this verse:

"Do you feel what I feel? See what I see? Hear what I hear? There is a line you must draw Between your dream world and reality Do you live my life? Or share the breath I breathe?"
"Do you feel what I feel? See what I see? Hear what I hear? There is a line you must draw Between your dream world and reality Do you live my life? Or share the breath I breathe?"
& of course the chorus as well, the song is "The Philosopher" by Death.

I think he is talking about the negative side of human nature and selfishness..... its as if he's singing parts of the song from the veiwpoint of the assholes that don't want to see anyone do good and will gladly take advantage or kick you down just to feel better about themselves or for personal gain......and it seems he sarcastically points out that life should be a straight line.....you choose a path and try your best to not stray from it, which can be hard to do with assholes throwing you off your game .... like bully's, rapists, child abuse, wife beaters ect. with assholes like that, life can be confusing "what am I supposed to think/say/ feel" And I think he is speaking of the finality of life.... how it must come to an end.....how we all leave home "what did you expect that we would never leave home" other words we all die. I believe the title of the song tells alot in this context..... because the mona lisa was of a homely, plain woman to most people but to enlightened eyes it is a priceless work of art. I guess what I get out of this song is that you only get one life to live, one night in town and its our choice how we choose to paint the picture and there is nothing more important than what we make of life....... but if you believe or put your trust in selfish people , you will end up wasting your life not even realizing the chance you have.
