Your Biggest Mistake Lyrics
Take cover
Signs don't show
You drove me off the road
But you let go
'Cause your hope is gone
And every question fades away
It's a shame you don't know
What you're running from
Would your bones have to break
And your lights turn off
Would it take the end of time
To hear your heart's false start?
You know this is your biggest mistake
What a waste, what a waste, what a waste
And of all the things you never explained
You know this is your biggest mistake
You tread water
Fighting for the air in your lungs
Move, move closer
Maybe you can right all your wrongs
But you let go
'Cause your hope is gone
And every answer fades away
It's a shame you don't know
What you're running from
Would your bones have to break
And your lights turn off
Would it take the end of time
To hear your heart's false start?
You know this is your biggest mistake
What a waste, what a waste, what a waste
And of all the things you never explained
Well, you know this is your biggest mistake
Wipe the mud spray from the face
Stop the engine
Stop pretending
Wipe the mud spray from your face
Stop the engine
Yeah, stop pretending that you're still breathing
It's a shame you don't know
What you're running from
Would your bones have to break
And your lights turn off
Would it take the end of time
To hear your heart's false start?
You know this is your biggest mistake
What a waste, what a waste, what a waste
And of all the things you never explained
Well, you know this is your biggest mistake

For me, I see this as a song about someone wanting to commit suicide. Just my interpretation anyways.
I also got that vibe.

@xlilx I see it that way too. Mostly because I was thinking of my story when I actually paid attention to the lyrics. Since one of my characters is suicidal, that's what I thought of. It actually gave me a lot of inspiration! Another reason I love this song.

This song speaks to me a lot. To me it means someone running away from something in their life but not really knowing the reason or admitting it to themselves. It reminds me of my biggest mistake. When I was a senior in college I met a great girl at my internship, who was finishing her masters degree and I was just out of a serious relationship. She was cool, smart, funny, loyal and laid back. We had a lot in common and had a lot of good times the year we dated and my parents loved her. She was the first girl I think I dated that was actually good for me but three months after I graduated and moving 1000miles away from her I began to tell myself I wasn't good enough for her, we wouldn't work out, that I still just wanted to fool around and party, and that I didn't love her. In the end I hurt her and she walked away forever. At the time my father told me I made a huge mistake letting an opportunity like her slip away but I shrugged it off. Now after dating a lot of other girls and growing up I realize she was the best thing for me. Now I realize at the time I didn't realize what I was running from, I was running from commitment and because I was scared of caring about someone that much. Maybe one day I'll find someone like her but right now I realize what I did two years ago was a huge mistake and I threw away a great person because I was too busy looking over the horizon I didn't see what was right in front of me.
The dad thing would make sense. But also could be about someone running away from a relationship? That's how I've always seen it anyway...
I see this as someone is running away from their issues and problems. Obviously they have made the wrong decision and that's what the song is about - their 'Biggest Mistake'.
I believe this is about someone confused and running away from something/someone amazing, and their blind to notice it. And by saying "It's a shame you don't know what you're running from." and how their "bones have to break and their lights turned off." Literally, this is in my top 5 favorite songs by Ellie and I'm obsessed with the lyrics in the chorus.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!

Best song on the album, but rest of album is also amazing!
Yea, Its about her dad :/ xx
That would make sense...Knew it was about someone running away.

Like so many other songs, it's open to the interpretation of the listener. Yet if you read about how her father left when she was five years old, other interpretations fade away.
