Skinny Genes Lyrics

I really don't like your point of view
I know you'll never change
Stinging me with your attitude
I've got the mind to walk away

I really don't like your arrogance
Or your policies
You're ninety-nine percent an embarrassment
Of just wrong qualities

I don't mind it when you [whistles]
Brings out the best in me when you [whistles]
Show your expertise
When the night always ends with a fight I'm excited
When you wind up next to me

I like it when you [whistles]
Can I have some please of that [whistles]?
Satisfy my needs
Sometimes I fake that I hate you and make up
And you wind up next to me

I really don't like your skinny jeans
So take them off for me
Show me what you've got underneath
So we can do this properly

I really don't like the way you smile
When you think you're right
But I will forgive you, the yoke is in the middle
And we're chewing through the wire

I don't mind it when you [whistles]
Brings out the best in me when you [whistles]
Show your expertise
When the night always ends with a fight I'm excited
When you wind up next to me

I like it when you [whistles]
Can I have some please of that [whistles]?
Satisfy my needs
Sometimes I fake that I hate you and make up
And you wind up next to me

I dreamt that you were on a train
And you were leaving, you were leaving
You made me think of what I'd miss
Do you believe it, you believe it

I don't mind it when you [whistles]
Brings out the best in me when you [whistles]
Show your expertise
When the night always ends with a fight I'm excited
When you wind up next to me

I like it when you [whistles]
Can I have some please of that
Take off your skinny jeans
Sometimes I fake that I hate you and make up
And you wind up next to me

I dreamed that you were on a train
And you were leaving, you were leaving

She's talking about a guy that drives her crazy-- so many things that he does make her mad and they're constantly arguing-- but even when all that, she can't resist him, and she's happy when he winds up next to her. She stirs up fights just to get him fired up. At the end, she dreams he was leaving and says, "Made me think of what I'd miss, can you believe it?" admitting that she would miss him if he was gone and that she really has feelings for him, and that she can't quite believe it herself.

I love this song. It's just got such a great tune. I agree, she's in a relationship where she thinks he's absolutely hopeless at everything else.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Skinny Genes lyrics by Eliza Doolittle

Could the title "Skinny Genes" also be referring to the idea of his image and saying that that's all he's got? Skinny=looks. I think the title just reinforces the physical attraction she feels for this person and how it's all about sex appeal.

"Take off your skinny genes" could be "show me what's underneath all the looks and appearance."

Instead of "Of just wrong qualities" it should be "I just want quality." And "are the best in me" should be "wind up next to me."

No idea why, but I totally love that the title is "Skinny Genes" eventough she's actually singing about Skinny Jeans :D It doesn't make sense to me, yet I love it!

It's titled "Skinny Genes" because he's the bottom of the gene-pool, in that he sucks in life at pretty much everything (except sex, clearly).

I'm curious as to the last line; 'I dreamed that you were on a train and you were leaving...' Anybody see or hear what Doolittle has to say about the song? It definitely sounds as if it were based on someone she knew personally.

She has said in interviews that the song is all made up (but it could just as easily not be). If that is true, then the train line is kind of like a fantasy within a fantasy

Penis talk :P and coming from a chick, thats sooo hot!

MY only question is why "Genes" in the title?

Genes make you who you are and this song is about the guy's personality, which she obviously dislikes. The only thing she likes is what happens in the bedroom. :P

You're ninety-nine percent an embarrassment with just one quality

When the night always ends with a fight I'm excited That you wind up next to me

Sometimes I fake that I hate you and make up So you wind up next to me

But I will forgive you, the yolk is in the middle And we're chewing through the white
