Plastic Beach Lyrics
To the dark dark seas
Comes the only whale
Watching ships go by
It's the daily try
It doesn't know
It's a Casio on a plastic beach
It's a Casio on a plastic beach
It's a Styrofoam deep sea landfill
It's a Styrofoam deep sea landfill
It's automated computer speech
It's automated computer speech
It's a Casio on a plastic beach
It's a Casio
Did they haul you out
On a really hot day
When the call got made
You'd have gone away
It doesn't know

"Jamming out to synthesized music on Plastic Beach" is the picture I'm getting from this song. 2D wearing his swim trunks, wailing on a keyboard, while drinking some absurdly alcoholic drink..
Casio makes hundreds of thousands of electronic products, chances are any number of electrical devices you own have some casio parts inside. This song is specifically about a Casio brand synthesizer that was used to help make this album.
This song is trippy... What a great album in my opinion. It's a shame about that floating landfill in the ocean. That's the only thing this song can be about. It's what the album's about. Styrofoam, plastic, trash, scraps all collected in the ocean like an island.
most likely explaining the concept of plastic beach itself from 2D's point because in the song he mentions whales (hes scared of whales) and being held there (he being forced against his will by murdoc). I got this from playing the plastic beach adventure game on gorillaz.com.

The only information I can find on Casio is that it's a company that makes cameras, watches and calculators... why Casio? Maybe because they're plastic?
Casio also makes keyboards and other musical equipment...

Albarn also had a lyric about Casio on Blur's "Mellow Song" - "Givin away time to Casio".

I don't know about you guys, but to me Casio yells out "watchmaker". Albeit reading this... i realize maybe in other parts of the world they smell of synths and stuff. That also makes sense.

Personally when I think Casio I think synths and electric keyboards.

I was stupid enough to not know that Casio made anything other than musical instruments for a good portion of my life, being a musician.

I still associate with Casio with primitive sampling keyboards and low-cost synths and whatnot.

Ballinbenji, Casio also makes musical instruments (primarily electric pianos, I think). Pretty sure that's what they're referring to.
Anyone know why 2D is afraid of whales? I think it has something to do with the actual meaning of this.
Also, artists don't always say exactly what they mean if you look at Andy Warhol for example everything he said about his art was sarcastic and mocking of his true ideals perhaps you're judging Gorillaz too quick saying there's no environmental concern when you think about it, Gorillaz are a set of characters meant to show a point they aren't precisely the point and shouldn't have a literal meaning
So maybe Albarn did say that, what did he mean though?
I don't think he's afraid of whales for any particular reason...

You must also remember that when it comes to art it can be interpreted in many ways so it does not really matter what the artist intended if it does not come across to the interpreter. I agree with you but if they did not intend to be about the environment it came across that way to so many people that it does not really matter.
