The Wrestle Lyrics

The crumpled ocean is no boat trip
Well, dark water stole my clothing
A shape stirs beneath me
A pulse pounds along bloodstreams
The first bite marks the beginning
Of the clotheless wrestle with the clotheless animal

Bare those teeth to me please, maneater
You can see all of me, naked with fear
This is the test I left land for
To grip flesh and pull muscle in
The vice clench of the struggle
I can't give in to the weight
Of the clotheless wrestle with the clotheless animal

My enemy, please stay close to me
I've no breath left, you cold breath thief
The last gasp with a burst lung
The fight father, a weak son
The last taste of salt in my mouth
My skin breaks with no sound
I'm torn limb from limb
There is bone, there is gristle and spit
In the clotheless wrestle with the clotheless animal

seems like it's about his internal struggle now that he's swam away from the girl throwing rocks at him from land (from 'swim until you can't see land'). the beast that is attacking him is his own mind.

the first song I have ever seen that is about both sex and being murdered by a kraken

i have to say i've never personally compared sex to being murdered by a kraken

he might want to see his chaplain

@owltiem this is cracking me up 🤣 I think I’m a little bit in love with ya

I truly think the song is simultaneously about the existential struggle, sex, and battling a shark in the middle of the ocean.

he is clearly battling a shark in the middle of the ocean. clearly.

I also endorse this theory.

Definitely about sex.

I can clearly see all three ideas suggested above; a physical/metaphorical shark fight, an internal struggle and sex.

It is about him drowning. It's a common theme in all his music up until he drown via suicide.

The clotheless animal is the ocean, the struggle is him wrestling with drowning. Lungs bust, last taste of salt, ripping him apart (the waves) the dark shapes below

The girl has driven him into the ocean, he's swam until he can see land and it now battling as he faces death from the ocean.

The song after this begins before is about swimming out to sea and the song after is about laying in a grave, so tired, after this struggle.

"You can sit only" I think is "You can see all of me".

Bone-chilling song. A song about sex that finally is excited and exciting again. He's come a long was since "The Twist" and "Keep Yourself Warm".

Yeah, you were right about the line, thanks.

The extra subtlety of his lyrics in this album give the songs so much more depth, it's impossible not to get a shiver!

I think this is about facing the beast within ourselves. He goes bare into a lake to test if he can beat the beast living inside of him and looses to it in the end.
