Shampain Lyrics
Laid dagger dead inside a lonely bed
Trying to hide the hole inside my head
Watching the stars slide down to reach the end
The sleep is not my friend
Drinking champagne to forget yesterday
Coz I remember, the way, the way, the way
It ended that day, the day, the day, the day
That I walked away, away, away, away
Drinking champagne, made by the angel
Who goes by the name of Glittering Gabriel
Drinking champagne made of an angel's
Tears and pain, but I feel celestial
Elderly stars slide down the morning sky
Slipping away to find a place to die
I wonder when the night will reach it's end
The sleep is not my friend
Drinking champagne, meant for a wedding
Toast to the bride, a fairy tail ending
Drinking champagne, a bottle to myself
Savor the taste of fabricated wealth
Drinking champagne, made by the angel
Who goes by the name of Glittering Gabriel
Drinking champagne made of an angel's
Tears and pain, but I feel celestial
Tears and pain, but I feel celestial
Tears and pain, but I feel celestial
Trying to hide the hole inside my head
Watching the stars slide down to reach the end
The sleep is not my friend
Coz I remember, the way, the way, the way
It ended that day, the day, the day, the day
That I walked away, away, away, away

shame+pain in case no one caught on...I didn't until someone pointed out champagne was spelled weirdly.
I think this is just a song about the troubles of substance abuse. The religious references I hear, as well; the only thing I can think of right now is that her love for alcohol is beating out her devotion or love to her religion. I don't know much about Gabriel, the angel is not in my holy book.
Wasn't Gabriel the angel that told Mary that she was going to have the son of God?

I noticed that champagne was spelt weirdly, but thought it was just saying about the pain bit, I didn't notice the shame part.

It could be Shame + Pain, although I think it would be Sham + Pain. Although it could be either, they both could work I think.

And Gabriel WAS the angel that told Mary she would give birth to the son of God.

Love this song! Pretty obvious what it's about - drinking away your troubles.
Making a correction; It's "toast to the bride, a fairytale ending" or "very sad ending".
Sorry typo, I mean NOT "a very sad ending".

There seems to be several religious references however i dont really understand the link between this and drinking champagne! Is anyone able to elaborate? My lack of religious expertise may be the reason for this!
I think the song is about a woman drinking away her problems with champaigne. I think that the problem on her mind is that she dumped someone or let a person go that she deeplycares about, although she didnt really realise how much she cared about tem at the time, but now that they're gone she misses them.
I think she probably wanted to spend the rest of her life with them, married or whatever but have a 'faiytale ending' with them. and i tink that the reference to 'elderly stars' is a refernce o herself being to old now and too late to be with the person she loved.
I think that the religious references to the alcohol are because of the deep need and worship she has for it as it is all she has to keep her going, i also think that the lyrics are a bit surreal which may relate to the disillusion you get when you are drunk.
For those who are confused, her album version of the lyrics are:
Laid out dead Inside a lonely bed Trying to hide the hole inside my head
The lyrics on her site say Laid back in bed, but I believe that was her previous version, as she has changed lyrics in her songs for the album versions. And you can clearly hear that she does not say "Laid back in bed."
Another site said "laid dagger dead" but if you pay attention closely there isn't enough syllables in what she sings for that to be correct. The way she pronounces her words it's sometimes really hard to tell what she is saying.

But your correction makes a lot more sense. Though it makes it sound like a suicide song. dose "Hole inside my head" refers to a bullet wound?

Consistency is questionable with that interpretation.

yes, but if you see her music video it involved being girls as zombies who died at a party. So I believe with talking about angels and such there is a death theme there and yes the hole in the head might be a bullet hole.

And you can also be dead without being dead of course, like how people joking refer to being passed out on alcohol and such.

I think its kind of obvious what this song is about. Something the likes of a bad breakup of some sort happened, so she drank champagne to dull the sting of whatever it was. She dips in and out of sobriety, from being ridiculously happy, to coming back to the reality of what happened/is happening. She also loves the feeling that she has while drinking the champagne because of all the assumptions aligned with it. (high-brow, extravagant, even the direct quote of it being used at a wedding, which might hint onto what the problem was.. etc) There's more still tho.

I think it is almost certain that it IS about drinking your worries away. BUT, I don't think it is necessarily about a break up. She could be drinking anything away really.
