Letters to God, Part II Lyrics
All the phones have rung and rung
They're off the hook, all but one
And all the mail stacked up inside
Up from the floor, a mile high
And like one word, like a child, I'm asking
Like I could knock on your door, will you let me in?
Dear God, I found out the same things
We learn when we die
I found out the truth is it's all a big lie
I find that the words are hard to describe
I'll tell you I'm lost here and waiting reply
Climbing trees and paper planes
Life as a kid, we're all the same
Tears of joy, swollen hearts
Sticks and stones and broken arms
And like one would like a child, I am asking
And like I could knock on your door, will you let me in
Dear God, I found out the same things
We learn when we die
I found out the truth is it's all a big lie
I find that the words are hard to describe
I'll tell you I'm lost here and waiting reply
I found out what's wrong and it's not you or I
Or anyone else that you chose to deny
It seems like the madness of choice and the lie
Has made it our prayer if we run and we hide
They're off the hook, all but one
And all the mail stacked up inside
Up from the floor, a mile high
And like one word, like a child, I'm asking
Like I could knock on your door, will you let me in?
We learn when we die
I found out the truth is it's all a big lie
I find that the words are hard to describe
I'll tell you I'm lost here and waiting reply
Life as a kid, we're all the same
Tears of joy, swollen hearts
Sticks and stones and broken arms
And like one would like a child, I am asking
And like I could knock on your door, will you let me in
We learn when we die
I found out the truth is it's all a big lie
I find that the words are hard to describe
I'll tell you I'm lost here and waiting reply
I found out what's wrong and it's not you or I
Or anyone else that you chose to deny
It seems like the madness of choice and the lie
Has made it our prayer if we run and we hide

I think this song is about Tom feeling as if God is not listening to his prayers or at least not responding to them.
"All the phones have rung and rung, they're off the hook, all but one."- Feeling as if it is his turn to be heard by God and not to be a phone that is off the hook.
"And all the mail stacked up inside up from the floor a mile high."- Thinking about all the prayers God has to get to. Feeling maybe that He is just falling behind because there is so many prayers.
"And like one word, like a child, I am asking. Like I could knock on you door will you let me in?"- He is feeling not only as if God doesn't hear his prayers, but also as if he is completely disconnected from Him and wants to try and get God's attention by "knocking on heaven's door."
Now the first chorus is basically saying you have figured out the meaning of life.Sadly, however, you cannot find the words to describe and explain your findings. And then in the end of course feeling disconnected from God.
The second verse is about the journey of life and the beauty of it. And then, once again, at the end of the verse feeling disconnect from/not heard by God.
Now the "add on" to the next choruses help a lot in explaining this song. "I found out what's wrong and it's not you or I, or anyone else you chose tonight. It seems like the madness of choice in the life, has made it all clear if we run or we hide." So basically, Tom feels as if he has figured out the connection problem with God. It's above him to know why God chooses some prayers to answer and not others (madness of choice in the life). And the disconnection or connection and the response to the connection/disconnection is all that really matters and is all that we can somewhat control.
Hope it helped!(:
"I'll tell you I'm lost here and waiting reply"
I think it should be: "I'll tell you I'm lost here, awaiting reply"
Song is pretty awesome, the chorus rocks.
i think its
''has made it UNCLEAR if we run or we hide''
makes a lot more sense
Some of these lyrics are wrong. Good song nonetheless. Goes along with my ambivalous views on religion.
That's so awesome that they have a continuation of the Box Car Racer song.
LOVE has renewed my confidence in this band!
this song is great. in my opinion it's simply about being lost and not understanding why god works the way he does. but you just have to trust it.
LOVE this song. and i'm with seanziii, love the fact that tom continued from boxcar.
zero's right. UNCLEAR does make more sense. Tom sure doesn't make it easy on us sometimes...
epic... EPIC, song.
I was hoping this song would be great when they showed the track list.. It is. I think the meaning is up for interpretation, obviously it's about communicating or understanding god's plan for us. This could be questioning god's existence because you aren't getting an answer or believing and hoping for answers.
I like the line "And like one would like a child, I am asking" which means he's asking a question like Why is the sky blue? like children often do.
Great instrumental intro, guitar sounds similar to other AVA songs but to me it's "their sound" which I like.
Corrections: "And like one word, like a child, I'm asking" should be: "And like one WOULD, like a child, I'm asking"
agreed with mkc "awaiting reply"
"Or anyone else that you chose (tonight?)" could be: "Or anyone else that you chose TO DENY" (not sure)
"It seems like the madness of choice and the lie Has made it our prayer if we run and we hide" should be: "It seems like the madness of choice in the LIFE Has made it ALL CLEAR if we run or we hide" (makes more sense)
