This song is awesome. I love the way he says California haha. I personally don't think it has a specific deep meaning. Maybe it's a memory of his or something. But it kind of just seems like one of those fun songs that aren't meant to mean much of anything at all. Something about California.
His dream is his memory of her back in his hometown but instead of going to her he wants her to come to him
I'm not sure, but this is what it sounds like what it's about to me:
He broke up with his girlfriend for the reason seeming to be that she was holding him back, but he's still missing her, he still likes her. So, to get away from this feeling, he leaves to California to try and forget about it. And when he gets there, he starts having a good time, a lot of fun, doing whatever he does. But he realizes that he's spending a lot of his time there, but doesn't want to leave until his girlfriend decides to "get off her ass", and stop holding him back. Once she does this, he would return and wouldn't "waste away" in California. But, he realizes she isn't going to change, and that he's having a better time in California, so he stays there.
I don't know for sure though at all -.- Just what I interpreted, yaknow?=/
