While You Were Asleep Lyrics
In the shallowest part of the night while you quietly slept,
I lay here and I counted the hours to the sound of your breath.
Can’t you love me?
Can’t you love me how I want, please?
I went walking down on Second Street through the leaves and the clutter.
In the pale yellow sodium light, nothing has any color.
Can’t you love me?
Can’t you love me how I want, please?
I lay here and I counted the hours to the sound of your breath.
Can’t you love me how I want, please?
In the pale yellow sodium light, nothing has any color.
Can’t you love me how I want, please?

This song is so hauntingly beautiful. I think the first part is him remembering how things used to be. He's reminiscing the way he used to watch her sleep and just take in her beauty. The second part is him alone, and realizing how dull the world is without her. I think the chorus is him still being selfish. It didn't work out between the two, but he's still pleading to be able to be who he thinks he should be and for her to love him just as that.
So sad, and I am in love with it.
