Sister Lyrics
Oh sister
What's wrong with your mind?
You used to be so strong and stable
My sister
What made you fall from grace?
I'm sorry that I was not there to catch you
What have the demons done?
What have the demons done?
With the luminous light once shined from your eyes
What makes you feel so alone
Was it the whispering ghosts
That you feared the most
But the blackness in your heart
Cannot last forever
I know its tearing you apart
But it's a storm you can weather
Oh sister
Those lines etched in your hands
They're hardened and rough like road map of sorrow
And my sister
They're is a sadness on your face
You're like a motherless child that's longing for comfort
Whats running through your veins
That's causing all this pain?
Does it have something to do with the pills they gave you?
What is eating at your soul?
Is it the whispering ghosts that left you out in the cold?
But the blackness in your heart
Will not last forever
I know its tearing you apart
But it's a storm you can weather
Oh sister

This song is definitely not about drug addiction. I think its more about a mental illness ie depression or schizophrenia ("the whispering ghosts" and "what have the demons done"). The "pills they gave you" is talking about medication etc to help rather than drugs. Saw him at the royal albert hall recently and he played this song which was the first time Id heard it. Its absolutely breathtaking, and no matter what its about express's the pain and anguish felt by both Dallas and evidently his sister in a completely emotional way.
i agree with eje. i do think this song is about depression and the struggle with non compatible pills. they can really mess yuo up if you are given the wrong stuff. this song connects with me so much, every performance he pours so much raw emotion into this particluar song.

this song is incredible. i saw dallas live and he introduced this song as a song he wrote for his sister (obviously). it literally made me cry when i heard it. dallas is such an amazing lyricist and he portrays the devastation of drug addiction so well in this song. amazing.
wow this song hits home for me. my sister entered the hospital a few days ago because of a heroin relapse and i, too, have battled with heroin addiction. she has dealt with so much, hearing voices, being bipolar, losing a very close friend to an OD under her watch, our parents' divorce when we were younger, a dad who wasn't there. she had over 2 years clean while on methadone, then slowly, and far away from us, she slid back into the dark. and i can't say i don't feel guilty and responsible for her relapse. i believe the 'lines etched in your hand' are track marks, to me. she and i used to be so close and now she hates me and our relationship is absolute shit. i just heard this song for the first time today, and it's crazy how it's like a puzzle piece the way it fits, the way i just want her to live through this and be okay and come back to the people that love her. i can't bear to see her gone forever.
Definitely a song about depression and looking in from the outside as a brother.
Every time I hear this song I cry like a baby. Dallas is an amazing songwriter and singer. This song is a perfect description of (what I believe to be) depression. I went through a tough time and resorted to self-harming and I KNOW my brother (who is older than me by two years) somehow found a way to blame himself. Listening to this song I feel guilty that my decision to self-harm made him feel exactly like this song describes, but it also brought my brother and I closer and allowed him to forgive me for my actions and understand that he is in no way to be blamed.
It's strange yet comforting how most people can relate to songs, especially this one, we all feel connected to it somehow, just as much as Dallas is.
