Aphonia literally means the inability to speak.
I'm not very clear where this fits into the Hero's Journey. Some versions of it have the Abyss as an opposite to the beginning of the journey, a place so foreign and inhospitable it seems unlivable for the Hero. Think Mordor from LotR.
Survival of the Abyss will permanently change the Hero, not solely for the better. Whatever else changes, they will almost assuredly have lost innocence in their trials.
