I think this is about realizing in the midst of a relationship, even as powerful as it is, that it going to end. The "ball of lies," are rearing their ugly heads. Even as much as he wants to keep going, and how much love there might be, he knows he must go. I think she is trying to change something about him, and he is not ready to.
