Coda: A Burn Scar in the Shape of the Sooner State Lyrics
run the water 'til it scalds you know that i'm listening
pitter-patter runs the shower hits the bare porcelain
watch the dirt run down the plughole, hear an echo within
they described you nude, in detail, i knew everything...
an artist's impression of the manhattan skyline
and a soon to be burn scar in the perfect shape of the sooner state
i fall to my knees
my piss-soaked jeans
the first time, the last time, all the times in-between
the first time, the last time, all the times i would've liked there to have been
i can't believe i chose the mountains every time you chose the sea...
pitter-patter runs the shower hits the bare porcelain
watch the dirt run down the plughole, hear an echo within
they described you nude, in detail, i knew everything...
and a soon to be burn scar in the perfect shape of the sooner state
i fall to my knees
my piss-soaked jeans
the first time, the last time, all the times in-between
the first time, the last time, all the times i would've liked there to have been

The thing with the bath, I think could mean two different things. Many people use the bathtub/shower as a place to sometimes just lay there/stand there...sure you're cleaning yourself off..but you're also reflecting, over all the stress in your life, everything that eats at you, everything that weakens you, etc. The dirt running down the plughole could be metaphoric, like cleansing yourself from this pain/stress. However I could also see this as being a place where a body was found, since the song right before it on the album was about a girl who was abusing pills.
The second half of this song, perhaps he pissed his jeans because he found her in this state, the same way he has many times before, maybe she's just passed out again, or maybe this time she's really dead. This happens often, he's fallen to his knees in fear and worry like he did the first time, the last time (that's what makes me think she's dead) and all the times in between.
The thing with "I can't believe I chose mountains every time you chose the sea" -Generally, I think we like to think of the sea as calm, open, breezy -- easy. -Mountains, you have to climb, you have to survive, you can fall and die, etc. I thought this sort of meant, "I can't believe I had the will to stay here, struggling through this with you, when you always tried to take the easy way out" He chose this hard life because he loves her, while she kept trying to chose the easy way out of her misery.
But why would he have 'liked there to have been' more times he found her like that?

Also, mountains - fixed, sea - constantly shifting?

He wants a fixed relationship, but she doesn't.
He wants a fixed relationship, but she doesn't.
Or if you look at it from The Sea Is a Good Place, mountains are facing yr problems, but all she wants to do is be dragged away to another seashore, and not face them.

"I can't believe I chose the mountains every time you chose the sea... " I think that he's come to realise that they have nothing in common.
I'd really like to hear some interpretations for this one, I've really no idea.
All I can tell is that it's about loss.
Whether it's a loss of love, or life, or something else, I can't tell. It's entrenched in these personal details that outsiders might not ever understand without an explanation.
It's beautiful. Wish it was twice as long.
"i can't believe i chose the mountains every time you chose the sea..."
To me this line was my favorite because this has happened to me before also in a relationship. I see it as him saying that every time his significant other would become open like the sea, he would become sheltered and closed off like the mountains. I could be totally wrong but I guess that's my interpretation of the song. :)
willc93 is spot on. the last line is just a conceited metaphor. i can't believe i went one way, you went the other.
i think he the relationship just dissolved, and he's bemoaning that, i certainly don't think there's death involved, though TSIAGPTTOTF and TIAF:TISNW both point to the fact that it could be. i just don't choose to think so.
The last line, "I can't believe I chose the mountains every time you chose the sea... " sounds like a reference to Skadi and Njord from Norse mythology. Skadi couldn't bear being away from her native mountains and Njord couldn't bear being away from his sea. The anguish it was causing each of them to see the other outside of their native domain ended up causing them to sacrifice the relationship to minimise their pain.
Similarly maybe it being referenced in this shows the irrevocable problems that caused a relationship to end, or how it was ended to minimise another pain within the relationship. If that makes any sense.
"The first time, the last time, all the times in-between The first time, the last time, all the times I would've liked there to have been"
"Pitter-patter runs the shower hits the bare porcelain"
The official lyrics say:
"They'd described you nude in detail, I knew everything: An artists impression of the Manhattan Skyline and a soon to be burn scar, In the perfect shape of the Sooner state."
