One's not enough
I won't stop 'til I've given you up
Clear-eyed as I am, it's hard having fun
It's much easier said than it's done
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
Oh
The room's still now when I'm lying
'cause the well of the night has gone dry
When they ask to behave, I pay them no mind
Now I doubt if I'd have been so kind
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
More
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
But I found you should know
It feels like being tranquilized
I know the separation kills us so
But I won't stop falling like raindrops
Because I like it when you lose control
I won't stop 'til I've given you up
Clear-eyed as I am, it's hard having fun
It's much easier said than it's done
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to

I feel like this song is about the inner turmoil you feel when you really want someone, but you know that person will hurt you. You try to convince yourself that person doesn't have the same effect on you as they used to. Still the tension is there - "the separation kills us so" - and its almost paralyzing - "feels like being tranqualized." Its about being addicted to a person... That person who is always in the back of your mind... That overwhelming physical attraction to someone you know is terrible for you. You both want each other, but you know that it won't work out. Maybe you always wonder what might have been if the circumstances had been different. It reminds me of the old saying: Sometimes love just isn't enough; or the Led Zeppelin song "Ten Years Gone" about lovers who have just got the timing wrong. It sounds like he's in denial about the effect this person has on him (as evidenced by the abrupt "No!"), but still he longs for her to hold him/ control him like before when things were good/ less complicated. Both people know that the sexual tension is there, but they're trying to control themselves when really they both just want to "lose control." Maybe each person is just waiting for a situation (getting really drunk haha) where the other person will cave... But that's just my take :) I love love love this song! I feel like it perfectly captures the tension between ill-fated lovers!
Wow yeah definitely.... that's exactly the situation I'm in except for the getting hurt part... but the whole denying of feelings hurts in itself I guess. But yeah, that's a perfect meaning for this song. I love love love this song too!

I will agree with you, It's sorta happing to me know. After a mutuel break up 14 years ago, I moved back to my home town only to be found on FB by the same guy. We did meet over some Starbucks & that's when he told me was married to the wrong person.....so yeah, this song has Gabe all over it..lol

mcpooch7 you are SO right on! I just looked up the lyrics to this song on here because my friend just posted it... And it's Romeo and Juliet in song, an ill-fated lover wrestling with the fact that it simply cannot be and trying to find the balance between that turmoil, the feelings that are left and the reality of it all. The friend that posted this song was my ill-fated lover...in fact, I might go so far to say he was the love of my life. It was almost comforting to know he is wrestling with the same feelings I am. I've never met someone who understood me on the level that he did, that I connected so deeply with...but being with him would blatantly take me out of the will of God for my life as we have some irreconcilable differences in faith...and it kills me...this song is my heart's cry right now. Thanks for your interp, it literally brought me to tears.
fighting addiction / sobriety
No, you don't move me anymore.
Almost like Peter Bjorn and John - It don't move me no more, except Yeasayer's version is better.
does anyone know what the acronym (O.N.E) stands for?
O.N.E. stands for "One's not enough," the first line of the song. I bet you wish you could delete your comment ;)

this song is incredible, i love it
Apparently it's about drinking/ alcohol addiction and breaking the habit. Makes sense if you listen to the song with that in mind.
It's about hooking up with an ex bf/gf over and over again and dealing with the detrimental psychological repercussions while simultaneously attempting to come to terms with it.
I love your post. The song title isn't just an acronym, it's an attempt to put a full stop to something that is still in motion. To everyone who has been there, we know that we can't end our sentence in one letter or one word.

I think it fits the alcohol addiction mould very, very well.
addiction is addiction is addiction, regardless of drug.
addiction is addiction is addiction, regardless of drug.
but i agree completely.

I think you could interpretate it into trying to get over someone you love/d. but i think "ones not enough" kind of leads onto the alcohol addiction. but with personification. hold me like before hold me like you used to CONTROL me like you used to
i adore yeasayer
