She flew across the sea
We talked on a small screen
A cubism dream
The most beautiful squares I'd ever seen
The canvas was free
A gift good mother gave to me
We joked at how they talked so differently
I will never know what had rot my heart
It just came and went in the dark
I had changed into the certain kind of man
That could break your heart with his own hands
We were to scan our own towns
And make good on what we found
Oh, what a fool I was to think
That I could get by on a smile and a wink
I make a friend, I make you sick
Could you even imagine a kiss?
We spoke of how we talked so differently
I spoke of how I felt so differently
I will never know what had rot my heart
It just came and went in the dark
I had changed into the certain kind of man
That could break your heart with his own hands
So in australia, on halloween
I proved what our love meant to me
The suffering, the struggling
I did it for you
I did it for me
We talked on a small screen
I did it for you
I did it for me

talking to an ex on the internet and realizing he still loves her.
...i think.
I would actually think the opposite.

Talking to a current girlfriend on skype... seems like she has gone abroad, likely Australia from the name drop. Realizes he doesn't love her anymore.

First verse is kind of the initial phase, oh we'll keep up, we'll joke around, I really miss you.

Second verse, time has gone on, things are becoming strained. I think you're really supposed to pay attentiont to the difference in the lines "we joked at how they talked so differently" (referring to Australians/indicating they're still on good terms) and "we spoke of how we talked so differently" (referring to themselves/the relationship becoming more strined).

The last stanza seems to lead to the conclusion that he surprised her in Austalia by visiting, but I think it could just as easily be read that that's the day he actually broke her heart. One way or another it "proved what their love meant to him."
I think you nailed it Scott.

Personally, I think the last 2 lines would suggest a breakup. I feel like "I did it for us" would've had the opposite meaning, but the fact he distinguishes "you" and "me" separately shows they separated. I'm just hung up on that line "i proved what our love meant to me." Could go either way. And I'm wondering if halloween has any significance in that stanza other than literally.
Well the Cubism movement tried to show all sides of an object at once. Perhaps this song too is purposely vague. My initial reaction was that it was about two lovers coming back together but I can see a compelling case made for the reverse and it being about a couple separating.
