Sun Hands Lyrics
i climbed to the top of a hill
but i had just missed the sun
and although the descending arc was gone
left behind were the traces that always follow along
the most beautiful colors chase the sun
they wrap her trail in a taunting gesture
that seems to sing out loud,
"this is what you're missing"
i'll endure the night
for the promise of light
i want to lift my hands towards the sun
show me warmth
baby, won't you show me warmth again?
and when i can feel with my sun hands
i'll promise not to lose her again
and even if the morning never comes
my hands are blessed to have touched the sun
and when i can feel with my sun hands
i promise not to lose her again
but i had just missed the sun
and although the descending arc was gone
left behind were the traces that always follow along
they wrap her trail in a taunting gesture
that seems to sing out loud,
"this is what you're missing"
for the promise of light
show me warmth
baby, won't you show me warmth again?
and when i can feel with my sun hands
i'll promise not to lose her again
and even if the morning never comes
my hands are blessed to have touched the sun
i promise not to lose her again

I think it's obviously CAN'T.
It hurts him so bad when he can only remember the power of the sun hands and the happiness he felt back then, so he swears to never let go again if he ever gets her back.
Is it necessary a girl? Well, probably. But the Sun that he misses so much can be just about anything. Enlightment? Deep feeling of belonging somewhere? Whatever it is, he caught a glimpse and that perseverance is what makes him "endure the night for the promise of light". Pretty awesome optimism even if "the morning never comes".
I agree with you on everything, but the lyrics. The way I see it, he is saying CAN. 'And when I CAN feel with my sun hands, I promise not to lose her agian.' It goes exactly with what you stated about how it hurts him so bad that he can only remember the power of the sun hands and the happiness he felt. Just as he says 'show me warmth, baby won't you show me warmth again', to me it seems like the feeling has been numb for some time. So when he CAN feel again, he promises not...

i think that just as a girl decides she is uninterested in him, he falls for her. He seems to see her as 'the sun', and furthermore, perhaps, the center of his universe. but she has moved on, chasing other stars, while he is left, only seeing her back.
Yes! That makes complete since! But i don't he knows that she's not interested. She's just out of reach.

My favorite song EVER.
Just one thing: I think it's "and when I CAN'T feel with my sun hands", though it's waaay difficult to tell, really; it just seems to make more sense, to me.

'baby, won't you show me warmth again? and when i can feel with my sun hands i'll promise not to lose her again' He asks for it, and reflects once he gets it. Doesn't the last line just a repeat of this.

This was the first song that I heard by this band and I love love love it! I recently saw them in concert (opening for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) and they were AMAZING! I'm waiting for Gorilla Manor to be released stateside.
Is it possible that this is and Clothed And Opened Eyed are song partners? Cause it sounds like this is the want for a relationship and infatuation and COE is about realizing that the relationship or infatuation was a bad choice cause you see how bad the person truely is.
Along with this, did anyone else find themselves thinking of "Icarus" when making this connection between the two songs? Ever-longing desire for the sun, finally gets to it and it destroys him...

the most beautiful colors chase the sun they wrap her trail in a taunting gesture that seems to sing out loud, "this is what you're missing"
this is so poetic. i love it. i think it refers to the colors at sunset or even the darkness at night and how the sun will never get to see it because it's already gone. however, the sun could be anyone.
This song really connects to me. I'm in the exact same situation. I've lost the only one I could ever love. It actually has it's way of kind of...keeping me holding on. It blows my mind and helps my psyche quite a lot to know someone feels what I feel and, unlike me, has made it into beautiful art.
I feel the theme is "Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." Or to fight for keep on fighting for someone's love.
I definitely see how this song could be about a second chance with a lost lover, and just appreciating that you had them at all.
But, as humans frequently do, I connect this song to my own current situation. I am in a long distance relationship with the most incredible person I've ever known, when I hear this song it always makes me think of her.
"I climbed to the top of a hill But I had just missed the sun And although the descending arc was gone Left behind were the traces that always follow along"
This part I relate to the journey and sometimes effort that relationships take. Long distance relationships can get hard when you go through so much with them but only get to see them sometimes. Every time you leave one another after being physically together, it really does feel like you are missing something amazing, and that it's a temporary end to your journey, feeling let down at the conclusion (in a perfect world you'd never have to be apart). But of course they can't leave without leaving parts of themselves with you, new things to fall in love with, new memories to cherish (leaving traces that always follow along).
"The most beautiful colors chase the sun They wrap her trail in a taunting gesture That seems to sing out loud, "this is what you're missing"."
Of course the traces that they left with you make you happy to think about and reflect on, but they can also hurt. She was just here with me, making my life so much brighter and warmer, now all I have is a cold room, her scent on my pillow, and her laughter ringing in my ears (trail of taunting gestures). I know that every moment that I'm without her I'm missing out on something beautiful.
"I'll endure the night For the promise of light"
But of course, I would never dream of ending our relationship, even though it can be so difficult to be apart (enduring the night). I would wait for as long as necessary because I know I'll see her again at some point (the promise of light).
"I want to lift my hands towards the sun Show me warmth Baby, won't you show me warmth again? And when I can feel with my sun hands I'll promise not to lose her again And even if the morning never comes My hands are blessed to have touched the sun"
And when we are together once again I cherish her presence as much as I possibly can, knowing that she'll have to leave and the my sun will set once more. I promise myself that someday we will be together for the rest of our lives and the times that we are apart will all be worth it. But even with this expectation of our future together, if our relationship was to end prematurely, I would still cherish her. Her existence, her light, her warmth. How she altered me in so many ways for the better. I'm blessed to have known her at all.
"And when I can feel with my sun hands I promise not to lose her again"
And if things go as planned, and we finish college, and our situations finally work out, we'll never lose one another again.
This might be my favorite "long-distance" song :) Thanks for putting the lyrics up!
