I think it's about the lure of cheating.

A new lover "rushes" into the lives of you and your partner. "Parting your lips" for an illicit kiss makes you feel "awake and unreal, off to nowhere," so that your cheating affair feels like the only important thing in your life.

But this temporary bliss really is "off to nowhere" good, it's all a delusion: "the only thing you've got, you know you're better off without."

Still, you surrender to the passion anyway ("Youngest fire, you decide") and mess up your life: "Near yet so far, isn't it?"

For me, this song is about a one night stand

(hence the "The forest is thick", "Need more people to be satisfied" and "You come into our minds and rush through our lives")

that turned out to be something more, maybe that the two lovers met more than once and got to know each other, ending up not knowing if they could be more than lovers. The entire song has of course many sexual references, such as

"In a wide open field we know we can feel Awake and unreal, off to nowhere"

with the first line implying the pure sexual pleasure, and the last part implying that they knew each other, but knew that they weren't meant for each other. The same goes for the line "The only thing you've got, you know you're better off without it".

The lines

"Youngest fire, you decide You decide what is right"

is another example where there is a total mash up between the sexual and yet emotional attraction expressed in the relation between the two lovers.

Maybe I'm wrong. Won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong? This heart of mine has been hurt before. This time I want to be sure.

My interpretation of this song is that it's about two lovers. As to what kind of relationship they have, I'm not sure. Maybe, it's an "open relationship" or maybe they're just "friends with benefits." And maybe they're tricking themselves into thinking that they are happy with the arrangement that they currently have but they are in denial. If the relationship has no future or is loveless, why continue being in one? That's what I get from the following line: "The only thing you've got, you know you're better off without it." It's better to stay single and wait for the right person to come along rather than staying in a pointless relationship with someone based on a fear of being alone or lonely. ⁠
