On a Highway Lyrics
On a highway
I take a mental picture
Of the place that I want
Now it's living in me
On a highway
Thinking of the one who
I left alone and hoping
I don't know how I'm coping
On a highway
I'll let the bad things taunt me
But do they want to haunt me?
I don't know how they find me
On a highway
I'll watch the singing driver
Only speak with femurs
He mouths the words he should say
On a highway
The pretty lady passenger
Her toes against the window
Are tapping to the tunes there
On a highway
I know they aren't moving
They move by conversation
I pretend to know what they say
On a highway
Can't say how long it's been today
I work against the window
That's caked in cold saliva
On a highway
And when they call me lucky
For all the places I stay
It's hard for me to not say
I can't wait
To find home
On a highway
Hypnotized by sunstroke
Passing by some deer bones
flowers for the dead grow
On a highway
There are some workers pissing
It starts my bladder itching
Can I wait for the exit?
On a highway
The median's green forever
I'll let some hash relax me
Get lost in human pleasure
On a highway
I'm sick from too much reading
Jealous of Noah's dreaming
Can't help my brain from thinking
I can't wait
To find home
I take a mental picture
Of the place that I want
Now it's living in me
Thinking of the one who
I left alone and hoping
I don't know how I'm coping

AC has this gift of turning really simple things into these deeply artistic and sentimental recollections. Can't we all relate to this? Missing home, yet not really having a home. You could go on for days about metaphors in this song. I like to look at it as what it is. He's on the road.
very introspective lyrics. the lines
On a highway I know they aren't moving They move by conversation I pretend to know what they say
really adds a couple more dimensions to the song. it isn't about cars on a highway; where you are, where you're going doesn't matter. what matters is your mind and the way you relate yourself. avey welcomes subjectivity and gets to know the people who pass him by inventing them himself, allowing us to peer into his creative process. great song, great ep.
This seems like one of the most self-aware songs they've done. The reference to the difference between his and Panda Bear's styles is really interesting to hear. Or like the drug reference, which has never been that direct in any of their songs. Just really fascinating. I've never cared so much about the lyrics to an AC song.
"i want to get so stoned and take a walk out in the night drizzle"
"i want to get so stoned and take a walk out in the night drizzle"
"I go up there and light a leaf"
"I go up there and light a leaf"
"I'm gonna go take some pills"-Purple Bottle

I agree, regarding the self-awareness. This whole album seems to be a passage of maturity, a development of self, mind, and spirit.

Also, to the other repliers, there are many drug references in their songs, but this one really is one of the most obvious. It is well spoken, bluntly written, and enunciated. The other lines mentioned are more cryptic or kind of muttered. They certainly don't reference the actual motivations for taking the drugs (except that posted by holycrapoctopus). Even then, its not just a reflection on the effects of drugs, or wanting to do them, but actually saying...

I fucking love all these replies. I totally agree with u quantazmo. Which song is the "go up there and light a leaf from?"

Favorite track off of the fall be kind EP. This and "bleeding" seem to be the deeper songs off of the new ep.
Just a quick correction, in the second verse I think it's
"Passing by some deer bones flowers for the dead girl"
I changed it to "deer bones", and I don't think "girl" is correct here. Anyone else hear this?

this is definitely just about avey being on the road on tour and missing his home, describing the things he sees as they go along.
I'm hearing something else in a few spots.
On a highway I take a mental picture Of the place that I knew Now it's living in me
On a highway Two pretty lady passengers Their toes against the window All tapping to the tunes there
On a highway Hypnotized by sunstroke Passing by some deer bones flowers for the dead growth
On a highway The median's green forever I'll let some hash relax me Get lost in human pleasure
This is a great song to listen to on a highway.
when he says "jelous of Noha's dreaming" do u think they're talking about Noah Lennox(Panda Bear)? or is he the one singing this one?
Avey is singing. The question my friend and I had over this line is do you think Avey is literaly jealous of Noah dreaming while he is awake and tormented by the road, or (on a darker note) jealous of his artistic ambitions?
