Whataya Want From Me Lyrics

Hey, slow it down
Whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?
Yeah, I'm afraid
Whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?

There might have been a time when I would give myself away
Oh once upon a time I didn't give a damn
But now, here we are
So whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?

Just don't give up, I'm working it out
Please don't give in, I won't let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?

Yeah, it's plain to see, baby you're beautiful
And there's nothing wrong with you
It's me, I'm a freak
But thanks for loving me, 'cause you're doing it perfectly

There might have been a time when I would let you slip away
I wouldn't even try but I think you could save my life

Just don't give up, I'm working it out
Please don't give in, I won't let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?

Just don't give up on me
I won't let you down
No, I won't let you down
So

Just don't give up, I'm working it out
Please don't give in, I won't let you down
It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?
Whataya want from me?

I've watched the actual video on YouTube a few times, and if you notice, it's almost as if there are two Adams in it. The one wearing the black t-shirt, hanging around the house... the other in a suit, singing at a concert. I think he did this song, and the video, as if it is two people singing it to each other. Pay attention to how the camera cuts between casual Adam and concert Adam, grouped with the lyrics:

Casual Adam: "Hey, slow it down" (0:11) through "Whataya want from me?" (0:51) Concert Adam: "Just don't give up, I'm working it out" (0:52) through "Whataya want from me?" (1:19) Casual Adam: "Yeah, it's plain to see, baby you're beautiful" (1:20) through "I wouldn't even try but I think you could save my life" (1:51) Concert Adam: "Just don't give up, I'm working it out" (1:52) through "Whataya want from me?" (2:20) Casual Adam: "Just don't give up on me" (2:29) through "No, I won't let you down" (2:45) Concert Adam: "Just don't give up, I'm working it out" (2:51) through "Please don't give in, I won't let you down" (3:03)

Then "both" sing: "It messed me up, need a second to breathe" etc. (3:04)

It's like "they" are singing this to each "other," like two people in a relationship who are struggling might. Asking each other what they want, trying to reassure each other, asking for patience. At times it even looks as if one is yelling at the "other" while the "other" sings - they're speaking, not singing, while the "other" voice continues to sing.

When you think about the fact that Adam is openly gay, to sing a duet portraying a couple communicating back and forth, what are his choices? Another male singer, or another female singer... a lot of the public would freak if it were a male, and a lot of the public would roll their eyes if it were a female. He found a third option... to basically "play" two different "parts." No worries about disillusioning or distracting people with homosexuality or heterosexuality being portrayed... just Adam, doing what he does best... singing his heart out.

I think it's fantastic and brilliant.

Song Meaning

well, you pointed out a very important thing about the music video. I was going to make a comment alone, but I decided to use yours to put my several thoughts about this song here. almost everyone seems to understand that it's not just about a relationship, that it could be directed to anybody: fans, loved ones, society, haters, mom, dad, brother, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, lover, BFF, friends, people, dog and blablabla. just another person, and somehow you, noticed the fact that it could be about himself. other people too, but no one gave an idea similar to mine.. you...

I also agree that the song is about the struggle of two individuals in a relationship but I also believe that it can also be interpreted differently as a song to the past and present selves of the singer. The struggle to meet expectations and values from both periods of their career (the old and the intensity of the new) and finding a way to satisfy both as they handle the insecurities of the present. A motivational song for the present by receiving some reassurance from the past. The complexity of this song is why I love it so much ^w^...

My Interpretation

I think this song may have been about when he was figuring out his sexuality. there's hints in the lyrics that suggest that.. like

Yeah, it's plain to see, baby you're beautiful And there's nothing wrong with you It's me, I'm a freak But thanks for loving me, 'cause you're doing it perfectly

I believe he's talking about a girl he may have been involved with at the time in this part. also

There might have been a time when I would give myself away Oh once upon a time I didn't give a damn But now, here we are

I think thats talking about how once in his life he may have ignored his feelings and how he may be gay, but now he thinks of himself differently and is starting to change his mind.

i think this is a really well-written song. it's about someone who is in a relationship that's not really all that great at being in a relationship. and they're begging the person they're with to keep being patient with them because they're loving them so well, and they just need a little time to figure out how to be a good partner. they feel like a freak because they can't grasp how to be in a relationship, but they're not willing to give up their relationship because the person is so great.

The song is written where it could be any gender singing to any gender. The orientation of a singer does not seal a song into a heterosexual or homosexual song. Its what it means to you.

My interpretation.. "I'm afraid, you sent me the signal you could be serious, I think I have the same feelings, but I've been hurt before and don't want to read you wrong. There was a time I would have walked away [didn't want to get serious or just walk away from uncertain situations] but think you could save my life [I have strong feelings for you]. Please don't leave or be hurt if I don't behave appropriately. Tell me what you want and give me a second to figure it out and pull myself together."

He doesn't want either of them to be hurt but he doesn't want to just take easy way out and run away.

"Hey, slow it down/Whataya want from me/Whataya want from me/Yeah, I'm afraid/Whataya want from me/Whataya want from me" In this line, he talks about how he's afraid that a relationship is going too fast and doesn't want to rush into anything serious.

"There might've been a time when I would give myself away/Oh, once upon a time/I didn't give a d**n/But now here we are/So whataya want from me/Whataya want from me" In this line, he says that he used to just give his love to anyone, not caring about the damage it does to him. But now that he's met the love of his life, he wants to focus on that person.

"Just don't give up/I'm workin' it out/Please don't give in/I won't let you down/It messed me up/Need a second to breathe/Just keep coming around, hey/Whataya want from me/Whataya want from me/Whataya want from me" In the chorus, he talks about how he doesn't want the person he's dating to give up on him and leave him, like others have done before. He also talks about how past heartbreaks have hardened his heart to love and that he needs some time to heal himself and needs the person's help to do so.

"Yeah/ It's plain to see/That, baby, you're beautiful/and there's nothing wrong with you/It's me, I'm a freak/But thanks for loving me/'Cause you're doin' it perfectly" In this line, he says it's not the other person's fault that their relationship isn't working out perfectly, and that it's his fault. He also thanks them for loving him, even though he didn't deserve it.

"There might've been a time that I would let you slip away/I wouldn't even try/But I think you could save my life" In this lyric, he says that, in the past, he'd let his lover leave him, and wouldn't even try to keep them with him, and he tells them that he thinks that they could put them on the right track and turn him into a better person.

My Interpretation

So I heard this song for the first time about, oh, fifteen minutes ago, via FUSE music videos. And thank heavens for DVR because I rewound and listened to it two more times.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't watch American Idol, didn't know anything about Adam Lambert -- other than he was this pretty gay boy that made all the girls go swoon, kay whatever -- until I saw the vid for "For Your Entertainment" which led me to enlightenment, lol. And that was a good song, dance-y, raunchy, catchy, and that was good enough. And I understood the allure of Mr. Lambert. (He's SO pretty.)

And then I heard this song, and, okay, it's not the best song every, but it hit me in this way that made me stop and listen... and rewind and listen... and rewind and listen again. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can relate. This whole "Hey, listen, I know I'm a freak, and I know I'm insane, and I know I have issues, but please just be patient with me and don't give up on me, because I swear to god I will not let you down if you stick it out with me."

Or at least that's how I feel about it. =]

Songs about two people in a relationship. One of them has been hurt many times and doesn't trust the other because they think it is too good to be true. They think the other person can do so much better so they ask "What do you want from me" wondering why they would ever want to be with them. They also say don't give up, because after sometime, they will learn to trust again.

okay, first. i just want to throw out there. WHO CARES IF HES GAY? All my friends think its a bad song cause hes gay. You wouldnt say "i hate their music cause their straight", would you? No. Anyways.

"There might have been a time where i would give myself away. Oh once upon a time, i didnt give a damn. But now, here we are, so whataya want from me?" I think he's saying he didnt care, and would do whatever with his life. But someone cared and made him realize. and so now he's asking them what they want from him, or why they did what they did. "Just don't give up, im working it out. Please don't give in, i wont let you down. It messed me up, need a second to breathe. Just keep coming around." I think their about to walk out on him, because he's got alot of problems he needs help with but he wont accept help. But he's asking them to stay a little longer and says he'll come through, but he needs to get used to the idea. "Yeahh, it's plain to see, baby you're beautiful, and theres nothing wrong with you. Its me. Im a freak. Thanks for loving me, you're doing it perfectly" He saying he knows he's got issues, and he's thanking them for being there. "There might have been a time where i would let you slip away, but i wouldnt even try because you might save my life" This is my favorite part, the line i would probably relate to my life. He's saying that he would have probably let them leave before, ad now he realizes now that he needs them and they might be able to save him. This is my new favorite song. Describes my life alot. I hope i got the meaning right haha.

I think "Whataya Want From Me" is such a beautiful tune written by P!nk; Adam captures the lyrics amazingly and the sounding quite nicely.

I feel the single is obviously about a complex relationship and the narrator wanting so badly to work it out with their partner for better, so they are asking them, "Whataya want from me?"
