Good Life

I don't see this song as a straightforward celebration of a "good life." I hear something more like desperation; a frantic search for meaning and connection amidst fading hopes that such things can actually be found in this life. The singer seems aware that he is more fortunate and better-off than the vast majority of the world's population: he insists that "this has gotta be a good life" since he has been afforded such opportunities by the accident of his birth in a wealthy nation.

He searches for this "good life" in raucous, reckless partying. Waking up with no memory of the previous night's events, and apparently in a different city than he was expecting, obviously indicates heavy drinking the night before. He knows that he met lots of people, went to interesting places, and probably did plenty of exciting things, but it's all a detached sort of fun. It's all what he's "supposed to do" as a young celebrity, but is it really what he wants?

He doesn't want to deal with that question. When you're "happy like a fool," you can forget about those troubling thoughts for a while. All it takes is a few more shots of liquor...or maybe some harder drugs.

The bridge lays it all out. The final line contains the theme of the song: "Hopelessly, the hope is we have so much to feel good about." We're young, privileged, and successful on top of that. We don't have a right not to be happy, right? But...what if we're not happy after all? What if the whirlwind days and the crazy nights don't satisfy that little part of us that wants the simpler, more elusive pleasures of warm companionship, purpose, and genuine human connection?

Well, "we all got our stories." With that, he dismisses any possibility that his unhappiness could be real or understandable. With it goes any chance of resolving the vague longing that troubles him. Stuff your discontent deep down inside, and pretend that it isn't agonizing while it eats at the very substance of your being. That's all you can do, as a conscientious and self-aware member of society. Eventually, the pain will stop...one way or another.

I was listening to this song before going to bed and I figured something out with one line of the lyrics. Some people are saying its "We are God of stories" and others are saying (like on here) "We out of stories", but the words really are.... "We all got our stories" hence the next lines of "So please tell me what is there to complain about?". I mean, everyone has their own stories regarding their lives, everyone has bullshit to deal with and everything like that, so what is there to really be complaining about? So, I think that line of the lyrics should be changed to "We all got our stories" instead of "We out of stories". Doesn't that sound about right plus make more sense?

Sorry guys, I'm not sure why some people think "We are God of stories" is grammatically correct/plausable unless your faith is deafening...

By cranking the volume on a FLAC file on a 5.1 system (which I will say I have faith in) it sounds like "We've got our stories..." So 'priderings' is correct, and its easier to hear on the second repeat of that verse as he splits the "we" "'ve" into two syllables.

It also makes more sense in relation to the lines above and below: -there's airplanes I can't jump out (emotional desperation) -there's bullshit I can't work out (hard times) -we've got our stories (relating to the above experiences) -but please tell me-e-e-e -what there is to complain about. (Because its a good life aka the point of the song..)

Anyway, this song is fantastic. And imo way better than Kanye's 'Good Life'. ;p

I think its about letting go of the bad things at the time and realizing you got the good life. Kinda obvious is it not?

Firstly, I think this song is about the struggles of being on tour away from your home and on the other side of the world. While this seems like a pretty generic subject to write about, I think this song is well done and strikes a chord with me.

Partying and meeting new, interesting people in new places on a day-to-day basis obviously creates an illusion of a great life, but when it's all said and done a feeling of emptiness looms and you have nothing to hold on to. One night stands are fun but when the day turn to months and the months turn to years, you start to feel empty inside and want someone to be by your side.

Despite this song obviously being from a celeb's point of view, and therefore on a different scale than what the average twenty something faces, it illustrates a struggle that all young people can identify with as they try to stave off impending adulthood. Living in revelry is very enticing and becomes addicting after awhile, but at some point you have to see that there is more in life and you have to move on. But, this is a tough thing to just let go of and accept.

To me, this song means that living the life is good from scratch... shit happens but at the end of the day you're still alive and having a good life. Doesn't speak about negativity but about life could be good, has to be good, it's really good good life.

--> If you feel that your life has got to be good, your life could be good, is because it can be, and it is good. You've got that feeling that nothing can fight it... your life is good, and if it's not good already, then you're headed there.

--> Hopelessly sound like "life is awfully bad but..." there's always a but, and despite all the hard things in life, there's always so much more to feel good, to have a good life.

Maybe I'm taking all too much positive but I can't take it in another way... you can't just read this song, you've got to hear it, and when you hear it you really come to a positive thougth of the song. Watching the video I can't take any feeling about, but the people that's passing the screen each other you can see them happy hahaha

It's "addressed to places like Abby Road." At least, I'm pretty sure that's what it is. And I think he's saying "We're out of stories so please tell me what there's to complain about" not 'We gotta story...' other than that the lyrics look pretty much fine.
