I just went to a Mayer concert and he has a story behind this song. He said imagine two lovers lying in the grass... It's 1954. It's a man and the woman he's so in love with laying in the park looking up at the clouds and they fall asleep in each other's arms. When the man wakes up he finds it's 2010, he's alone, and by some cosmic twist of fate he's landed there. He looks everywhere for the girl who he's completely in love with. He finally walks into a bar and sees the girl who has his heart. He walks up to the girl and says "Do you know me?" and she replies "Uh.. No." And as his heart goes into his throat and is about to break into a million pieces he realizes he must convince this girl of the love they had and start from the beginning to get where they got to. He has to convince this girl that they are in love, that they're soulmates.

I think this is pretty straight forward...love at first sight.

i think it's either love at first sight like suff22000 said or it's a feeling of familiarity with someone you don't know very well but you feel like you could have been something at some point in time, or if circumstances allowed it, now. so yes, basically, love at first sight..... but i think it's more about the inner connection and not about simply looking at someone and finding them attractive to the point of infatuation.

Okay...Well where to start? I like the lyrics considering I'm kinda "New-Age(y)" but the way the whole thing came together I'm really not diggin'. Probly my least fav. or close to for Battle Studies.

This song would be one hundred million times better with just two verses, and no repetition of "do you know me at all". That lyric shouldn't even be a part of the song.

The guitar part makes this song, the constant repetition is completely unnecessary.

i actually do like this song. But I agree that it ould have been stronger without the repeating of the 'do you know me' part. Still i like the simplicity of the song and how it stands out. I had to laugh a little when i read the lyrics (which i looked up because I found the feel of this song was a little different from most songs on battle studies). I've been listening to john mayer since his first album came out, but besides the fact that he's funny he's also a little 'out there'. He's a little typical, but his quirky streak and the way it shows in his music and style always puts a smile on my face. (maybe it's recognition)

I need to explain what this song means to me. Maybe you’re gonna think I’m crazy and it’s probably true cause even today I can really explain all that strange things happened to me since this two last years...

In summer 2008, I discovered a new artist: J.M (I have to say I’m French and unfortunately your amazing musician is almost unknown in my country) and I found his music and lyrics so magic, so beautiful and so inspiring. And one thing leading to another, I felt myself very close to him. Too close. Strangely, it was like if I had always known him. As if it were an obvious thing And since that “meeting”, a lot of strange things happened and when I say strange, I’m talking about weird phenomena like past life dreams about us and other significant dreams, synchronicities , coincidences and other stuffs... But especially when I see him, I see myself. Although I don’t know him, in real I mean, he resembles me a lot in many ways.

I know it sounds crazy. It’s pretty hard to explain it even to myself. Why I feel so drawn and so close to a man, a famous person, I didn’t even know two years ago.

So, I think it’s about an inner connection between two people, a bit like soul mate love.

I’m not saying this song is a part of my story, not at all. And it’s probably not (there are so many women around him lol) but when I heard this song, I couldn’t stop thinking maybe it’s about that and mostly when he asks: do you know me at all?

This one is difficult...there is something untouchable about the man singing the words.

Does anyone see a relation to eternal sunshine of a spotless mind? Because I do. haha
