i feel like dave is singing "so erase the damages we've made" instead of "so we raise the damages we made." i think it makes more sense.

The meaning seems sort of obvious to me. It's telling a story of a guy and his girlfriend or wife have been drifting apart, or fighting, and letting their angers out. This guy wants to fix things up, but he doesn't come out and tell her, "I want things to be right again."

This means...well. The 'story left untold' would be how he feels, and how he wants to make it so right ('better than you know'). She just doesn't realize that he wants to patch things up.

I feel that this song is about a relationship that has gone down hill. They keep arguing and things just aren't getting better, but he wants things to get better. He wants to make things work, but it's just not working. "The words to keep you home are failing." I feel that this song symbolizes the end of a relationship and in the end, the only thing that will really be remembered or thought about or even talked about among friends is the beginning of the relationship, when things were good and happy, "The story left untold is better than you know." You can tell that things were good at the beginning "Of all the nights we spent, wrapped in blankest, no mattress on the floor, we now hold sacred, you were my best friend." This is pretty much saying that they were close and they spent a lot of time together. They had good times, but now it's come to an end. He doesn't want this to end, but she's walking away, but he still has stuff to say to her, they just give up on what they had. "Slow down, take a deep breath, we can't give up tonight." Then thw chorus talks about how they're letting go of a relationship, but he doesn't want to see what they had die. The bridge is just basically saying that he has stuff left to say and if she would just slow down, he can say it and maybe she won't slip away from him. Yeaah, that's what I think the song means.
